[1] Said to have originally constituted part of a doctoral thesis on the Latin vocabulary of astronomy, submitted to the Sorbonne on 11th December 1970.

[2] A reprint of the edition first published in 1977

[2a] After the first of 2010

[2b] Another early impression, perhaps from the late 19th century in view of the Foulsham label pasted over the top of the publisher’s name in the copy we have seen, has a different title page which instead explicitly attributes this entire volume to Mme la Comtesse de C***, whose real name is stated in an authoritative auction record to have been Madame Breteau. The libraire Breteau was a French publishing house in the mid-19th century, and her involvement in this is presumed. Madame Breteau is also reputed to have created the tarot deck associated with the first volume of this series

[2c] The author indicates that the book originated in but was extended from a series of lectures he gave between September 16th and October 2nd, 1946, at a congress held at the Institute to whose series of publications it belongs on the subject of the period from 400-800 C.E..

[3] This appears to be an addition at the time of rebinding; its purpose is not clear but it may have housed a previous owner’s note

[3a] After the first Perennial Library edition of 1978

[3b] Library records give 1981

[3c] After the original Brandon Books edition of December 1971

[3d] On the title page of this book, the author gives his real name in parentheses as ‘J. E. Sunley’

[3e] On this copy, the word ‘Sidereal’ has been penned in by hand on both the front cover and the inner title page, apparently by the author, who refers to the volume by the full title including ‘Sidereal’ in his list of other works in ‘Modern Aspects’, q. v. above

[4] After the first of 1977

[5] On the dj rear flap it is stated that she is ‘often called America’s foremost astrologer’ – the same as was claimed of Carroll Righter by his publisher only a year earlier, and similar to claims made of the original Zolar in 1962

[6] Stated on front dj flap

[6a] After the original hardcover edition published by Prentice Hall in 1972

[6b] It is not immediately apparent in view of the low printing quality if this is the actual edition as printed or a custom-bound second-generation photocopy

[7] The DNB record supports this being the actual date of publication

[8] The first of a projected series of two volumes, the second of which seems never to have appeared although Lefeldt says in his foreword that it ought to soon

[8a] After the original edition of June 2000

[9] Dated 1989; but this copy was purchased new over a decade later, and is almost certainly an undeclared later printing

[9a] Aside from ephemerides, this publication features two dual-columned pages comprising two essays on Eros, one by each of the editors

[10] A bound photocopy-based reprint of the dissertation originally published in 1998

[11] Described on the dj rear flap as “Senior Lecturer in Roman History, Classics, and Ancient History at the University of Manchester”

[12] Said to be the product of a decade’s worth of ongoing revisions of the author’s Ph.D. thesis, originally presented at the University of Toronto in 1996. The first 143 pages are given over to a study entitled “Parapegmata and Astrometeorology”.  A catalogue of extant parapegmata (i.e. ancient sources on astronomically-based weather prediction) follows from pp. 147-216. The main bulk of the book from pp. 217-491 presents English translations (in all cases) and in many cases also ancient Greek editions of relevant sources

[12a] A series of publications edited at this time by A. J. Vanderjagt, supported by an editorial board of four, including J. D. North

[13] A series of publications edited by Ivan G. Marcus and Peter Schäfer

[13a] This copy has been stamped 18. Sep. 1937 to the upper margin of the rear cover, a likely indication of its date of printing or first sale

[14] A compilation of three studies on the ancient decans: “Der Naos mit den Dekanan aus Saft el-Henna” (pp. 3-57); “Die Dekane der diagonalen Sternuhren in astronomischer Sicht” (pp. 58-116); and “Die ramessidischen Sternuhren” (pp. 117-264). The first of these studies was a major source for the later book “The Naos of the Decades” by Anne-Sophie Von Bomhard, q. v.. The second and third build on the research of Neugebauer and Parker in their series “Egyptian Astronomical Texts”, q. v.
