[1] A very long-running series of critical editions of ancient Greek and Latin texts, edited at this time by Günther Christian Hansen

[2] A critical edition of the Latin text of all five books

[3] A collection of publications founded by James Loeb, and collectively edited at this time by G. P. Goold, who is also incidentally the individual editor of the present volume

[4] An edition of the Latin source text with facing English translation and a lengthy introductory commentary

[4a] After the revised edition of 1992 and the first edition of 1977. The revised edition of 1992 incorporated changes to the Latin source text based on Goold’s work towards the scholarly Teubner edition of 1985, q.v. above, and consequent changes to the translation, over the 1977 edition.

[5] This originally two-volume edition was issued as part of a large collection of classics comprising over 100 volumes, that was apparently originally sold only as a complete set by Valpy. In spite of the misleading reference to Bentley in the title, the Latin text and many of the extensive accompanying footnotes (which generally exceed the length of the text itself on every page) are a reset reprint from the much earlier Michael Fayus edition published at Paris in 1679, but fill pp. 35-809, hundreds more pages than the equivalent text takes up in the Fayus edition, thanks to the parallel addition of a second set of annotations in the edition of Valpy. Appendices include a reproduction of Julii Pontederae Epistola (previously featured in Stoebler’s edition, q. v.) spanning pp. 815-822, a reproduction of Petri Danielis Hueti Animadversiones in Manilium, et Scaligeri Notas (reset from the Fayus edition of 1679) spanning pp. 824-889, and an editorially selective reproduction of highlights from Stoebler’s commentary, spanning  pp. 894-934 (only 41 dual-columned pages, as compared with the 382 pages filled by the complete set of Stoebler’s notes in the original Stoebler edition of 1767, q. v.)

[5a] Julii Pontederae Epistola fills pp. 31-8 of the prefatory pages and is dated April 1733 so is clearly a reproduction

[5b] The original printed edition of Stoeber’s commentary on Manilius’ Astronomicon, which comprises pp. 150-531 of the volume. This is preceded by either a reprint or, according to some sources, the bound-up unused original printer’s sheets from the Basel edition of 1740 of Richard Bentley’s text, as it was published in that edition, without Bentley’s commentary. Stoeber’s commentary is written entirely in Latin and was treated with derision by A. E. Housman in his own edition of the early 20th century, q. v..

[5c] Hawtree (1789 to 1862) was a notable linguist and book collector with a reputation for his ancient Greek scholarship, who served as headmaster of Eton College from 1834 to 1853

[6] A critical edition of the Latin text, with scholarly annotations in Latin, but extensive introduction in English. The other volumes in Housman’s edition (q.v. below) follow the same pattern, although with slightly less voluminous introductions

[7] After the Grant Richards first edition of 1903

[8] After the Grant Richards first edition of 1912

[9] After the Grant Richards first edition of 1916

[10] After the Grant Richards first edition of 1920

[11] After the Richards Press first edition of 1930

[12] With separate title page to p. 1 of the second part: Scaligeri, Iosephi Iul. Caesaris F. “In Manilii Quinque Libros Astronomicon Commentarius & Castigationes” Heidelbergae, 1590. With separate title page to p. 1 of the third part: “In Manilii Astronomica Variae Lectiones, Cum ex antiquis libris, tum ex MSlonge (?) optimo de bibliotheca Friderici IV Comitis Palatini ad Rhen. &c. comportatae: Cum Notis Fr. Iuni Biturigis”

[13] The AFA’s reprint, probably from 1970-4, of an earlier retyped edition first published thus by the National Astrological Library, 327 A Street, S.E., Washington 3, D. C., 1953 – itself based on the original edition of 1697, q. v. above. The 1953 edition was introduced by Ernest A. Grant and his introduction has been carried forward into this edition

[14] “Introduzione e traduzione di Riccardo Scarcia; Testo critico a cura di Enrico Flores; Commento a cura di Simonetta Feraboli e Ricardo Scarcia”

[15] The first volume in a two-volume set of an entirely new critical edition of Manilius’s Latin source text, with facing modern Italian translation.

[16] The date of the I edizione is given as 1996.

[17] A German translation of “Astrology and the Art of Healing”, q.v. below

[18] A former owner has recklessly glued the dust jacket down to the insides of the front and rear covers, rendering the extraction of the book impossible without damaging the book, and the original boards and spine invisible.

[19] A compendium of 14 essays by different contemporary astrologers

[20] A reprint of the first German edition of 1993, itself being a translation of ”The Divine Plot”

[20a] After original edition of 1992 and two subsequent reprints in same year

[20b] After the original edition of 1979

[20d] Only the copyright date of the first printing, 1985, is shown; this one is presumed to be from at least 5-10 years later, if not 15 or more

[21] German library records show the original edition to have been published in 1927 by Erich de Ponte, also in München. Many of the issues of the 1927 edition are recorded as having longer page counts. The reason for this is not known, but the text being reset to compress more onto each page for the 1939 edition could be a partial explanation

[22] A separate standalone publication of Lehrbrief XII in the work above

[23] DNB gives 1939

[23a] After the original edition of 1934, the second of 1950, and the third of 1961

[23b] In this printing, no mention is made of that of 1991, but it would appear from the evidence of the later 2017 paperback reprint to be an undeclared early hardcover reprint

[23c] After the original edition thus of 1991

[23d] After the first edition thus of 1992 and first reprint of 2001

[23e] Her credits continue: ‘B.A., M.Ed., Doctorate in Counselling’

[23f] After the first of 1983

[24] After the first of April 1974 and second of January 1976

[25] It is curious that both copies claim to be from the third printing, and yet one has two additional illustrated pages and no advertisement. It can only be presumed either that there was a change of plan part-way through the third printing, or that one of the issues of the so-called third printing is in fact a fourth printing

[26] A posthumous reprint, after the original edition of 1957. The author’s dates are given as 1882-1966
