[4] According to the limitation notice, the limitation applies equally to both volumes in this set, but it is printed only in the second one.

[11] A recent impression, purchased new in the early 2000s, of the Health Research facsimile reprint first published 1965, itself sourced in an original copy of the Fourth Edition, Revised and Enlarged by the Author, Illustrated with Ten Plates. The source edition bears the imprint “Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., Ltd., Dryden House, Gerrard Street, Soho, London, 1904”. This copy bears the publisher’s website address to the copyright page, proving that it cannot predate 1994. In all probability it was either printed and bound up on demand, or issued from small recently printed stocks, at the time of purchase. For the purposes of this catalogue, to avoid duplication of text, I have used the simplified title presented by Health Research on the front cover, although the full original title page has been retained in facsimile within.

[12] The much lengthier page count of the 1904 edition than that of the first edition shown above is mostly the result of the text having been reset with significantly fewer and shorter lines per page. But the text also has been significantly edited since the first edition of 1889 (shown above). The initial section on astrology spans pp. 4-124 in the 1904 edition compared with just 1-71 in the original one. And yet, the original short Chapter VII, on the Part of Fortune and Dragon’s Head and Tail, has been cut out, together with all other references to the Part of Fortune in other chapters. Further, quite a few traditional terms have been removed from the chapter on the Explanation of Terms. The paragraph on indications of death occurring by violence on pp. 58-9 of the original edition has been cut out. Two paragraphs have been added to the chapter on directions and horary questions (pp. 97-8 of the 1904 edition) and one removed. Finally, a whole new chapter XIII, Solar Horoscopes (pp. 103-119), has been added, sourced in the author’s translation of   the work listed under Anonymous (21) above. These changes in content between the 1889 and 1904 editions are quite a revealing reflection of the popular direction of astrology in the intervening years

[13] Hand-dated “Oct. [19]64” by a former owner

[14] A series of publications edited by Nicola di Cosmo; Devin Deweese; and Caroline Humphrey

[15] A study, transcription and full English translation of the Manual of Mongolian Astrology and Divination, a work previously published in facsimile form with only partial translation in 1969 (see under “Anonymous (11)” above). The present volume closes with a glossary and extensive indices
