[0] The main pagination of this volume comprises a compendium of meticulous drawings of 1648 mostly fragmentary cuneiform tablets found at Babylon in the 1870s and 1880s and at Uruk in the 1910s and held at the British Museum. The drawings made by the scholars Pinches and Strassmaier in the following decades are reproduced together in print here. The tablets feature chiefly astronomical and astrological texts, but a few other divinatory texts and mathematical tables also included. The volume commences with a triple-columned descriptive catalogue identifying the numbered fragments and cross-referencing the earlier ones with their appearance in the then-recently-published volume edited by Otto Neugebauer Astronomical Cuneiform Texts, q. v.. The greater part of the material consists of astronomical diaries, while almanacs, goal-year texts, planetary and lunar observations, horoscopes, the Enuma anu Enlil, and part of MUL-APIN are also included. Most of these texts have since been edited, transcribed and translated in dedicated volumes by later scholars.

[1] A date around 1932 is strongly indicated by internal evidence. One of the articles, about the film star Ery Bos (born 3 October 1908), and featuring a picture of her as a young woman, indicates a date in the early-to-mid 1930s. Her films were released in the narrow period of 1932 to 1934. Another refers to Marlene Dietrich’s film “Die blonde Venus”, released in 1932. Another features a letter to Sachs dated December 12, 1932

[2] Said to have been translated from the German edition published in 1997 by Wilhelm Goldmann Verlag, München

[2a] After the original edition published by Vega of London in 2001

[3] A strange device, but apparently designed that way. The card covers themselves are without print and presumably were not designed to be seen

[3a] A compilation of Dykes’ translations from the Arabic of ‘The Introduction’, ‘The Fifty Aphorisms’, ‘On Questions’, ‘The Book of Choices’, ‘On Times’, ‘On Nativities’, and ‘The 66 Sections’, together with a short anonymous work called ‘The Connections of the Lord of the Ascendant’ said to have been annexed to manuscripts of ‘On Nativities’, and suspected by Dykes as having been authored by Māshā’allāh

[4] A compendium of translations by Dykes, consisting of Sahl’s “The Introduction”, “The Fifty Judgments”, “On Questions”, “On Elections” and “On Times”; and Masha’Allah’s “On the Knowledge of the Motion of the Orb”; “On the Roots of Revolutions”; “Chapter of the Rains of the Year”; “On Rains”; “On the Revolution of the Years of the World”; “On the Significations of the Planets in a Nativity”; “On Nativities”; “On the Interpretation of Cognition”; “On Hidden Things”; “Book on Reception”; and “What the Planets Signify in the Twelve Domiciles of the Circle”

[4a] A series of publications edited at this time by Jonathan Barry, Willem de Blécourt and Owen Davies

[4b] Despite the lack of its mention in the title, astrology is central to the focus of this volume, which comprises eight studies by the author, nearly all of which are directly concerned with astrology. Subjects include the work and thoughts of Abu Ma’Shar, Al-Kindi, the Picatrix, Marsilio Ficino, Pico della Mirandola, John Dee, and (in a combined study) Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas and Roger Bacon.

[4c] A subseries collectively edited at this time by Maribel Fierro, M. Şükrü Hanioğlu, Renata Holod and Florian Schwarz

[4d] A collection of thirteen mostly substantial essays by different scholars, divided into two main themes: Occult Theories and Occult Technologies. They are preceded by a lengthy introduction by Saif and Leoni. Included are a 12-page essay by Charles Burnett entitled ‘The Three Divisions of Arabic Magic’, and a 55-page study by Saif on the longer version of the Epistle on Magic (52b) by the Brethren of Purity

[5] Pseud. of Émile-Dominique Nourry (1870-1935). His surname is misrepresented by De Herbais de Thun as ‘Nourrit’. This work was posthumously published through his publishing house, presumably by his successor J. Thiébaud, to judge from the printed legend

[6] The date of the original printing is given as 1976

[6a] A note is added: ’Printed in the United States of America by CSA Printing and Bindery, Inc.’

[6b] Copyrighted 1970

[7] It is dated 1974 but in suspiciously immaculate condition with glossy covers, and therefore suspected of being a much later undeclared AFA reprint in common with other pamphlets by these authors

[8]Falsely dated 1974, but clearly a later printing as the AFA had not moved to this address before 1975

[9] The date of the original printing is given as 1977

[9a] The date of the original printing is given as 1977. The present impression is printed on notably thinner paper than the fourth shown above, resulting in a narrower spine profile; the previous typesetting of the lettering to the spine is retained, but no longer comfortably fits on the spine, spilling over to the boards

[10] Copyrighted 1972, but this is unbelievable in application to this copy in new, glossy condition; it is therefore suspected of being an undeclared recent AFA reprint

[11]  Copyrighted 1975. This copy, however, is suspected to be a much later undeclared monochrome facsimile reprint, perhaps by the AFA

[12] Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Department of Middle East and Asian Studies, Columbia University

[13] The copyright date of 2007 presumably relates to the original printing
