[1] Address taken from dj – not on title page

[2] The equivalent for the present volume of the ‘Annexe Mobile’ that was packaged as a separate pamphlet with Tome 1, here instead bound in as part of a single volume, with its own separate title page on the front side of the first leaf

[2a] A ’special edition’ after the 1948 edition first published thus by W. Kohlhammer Verlag, Stuttgart. No separate printing date is provided for the present edition, but the Europäischer Buchklub is said to have been founded in 1950, suggesting that as the earliest possible date

[3] “With a new Introduction and References by Owen Gingerich”

[4] “Bibliographical Citations by Owen Gingerich and Alain Segonds”

[5] The date given is that of the first printing of the Dover edition, but this is clearly (from the website address in the advertising) a later reprint of Dover’s own 1993 edition, which in turn is said to be an enlarged republication of the translation first published by Abelard-Schuman, London, in 1959, of the German original of 1948.

[6] A translation of the main part of the original 1927 edition of the work below, but without the Latin text appendices that comprised half the original volume.

[7] A reprint of the original edition published in Leipzig and Berlin in 1927 as Heft 10 in the series “Studien der Bibliothek Warburg”. The contents after p. 201 are appendices consisting of two Latin texts. The first is the “Liber de Mente” of Nicolaus Cusanus, edited by Dr. Joachim Ritter and presented with a facing German translation by Heinrich Cassirer. The second is the “Liber de Sapiente” of Carolus Bovillus, edited in Latin only by Raymond Klibansky

[8] A study of the Risala fi matrah al-shuacat (Treatise on the projection of rays), an 11th century work by an Andalusian mathematician and astronomer named Ibn Mucadh al-Jayyani. It is said to deal with the astrological topics of house division and the “projection of rays”

[9] At the foot of the title page, both volumes are identified by their collective place in the series “Anuari de Filologica (Universitat de Barcelona)” as: XIX (1996) B-2

[10] This first volume contains 17 essays on Arabic science, mathematics and astronomy, by different scholars including David Pingree and J. D. North.

[11] This second volume contains 11 essays on Arabic astrology, astronomical instruments, and popular astronomy, by different scholars including E. S. Kennedy, J. D. North, Julio Samso, Paul Kunitzsch and David A. King.

[12] A collective scholarly endeavour, thus appears under its own title in the index and not scattered among the names of the separate editors. This set formerly in the possession of the prominent 20th century scholars of the history of astrology Wilhelm and Hans-Georg Gundel (q. v. under Gundel below), and bearing mostly occasional but sometimes quite extensive hand annotations, both inked and pencilled, of one or possibly both of them. The stamp of Prof. Dr. Wilh. Gundel, Roenstr. 6, Gießen, appears to the ffeps of the hardbound volumes containing all parts from Tomus I to Tomus VIII Pars IV, except Tomus V Pars 4. A different stamp, probably of Prof. Dr. H. Gundel, though the H. is partly faded to the point of unclear legibility, with the address of Am Alten Friedhof 20, 63 Giessen, appears to the ffep of the volume containing Tomi IX and X. The Vol. comprising Tomus VIII Pars I and Tomus VIII Pars II additionally bears the signature of Franz Cumont, ‘Hommage dévoueé de Franz Cumont’, presumed in dedication to Gundel, followed by a handwritten address ‘Paris, 13 Avenue Kleiber’ in a different ink.

[13] How this ended up in this volume is unclear, but it would seem plausible that in 1929 Dr. Helnike was a lecturer at the same educational establishment as Wilhelm Gundel and that the form had come into Gundel’s possession through that connection.

[14] [Sic]

[15] They have been hand-numbered in pencil 31-36 but are presented out of order.

[16] The print type is modern, but a handwritten note at the top of the first leaf mentions as a possible clue to the identification of the text ‘Gergis philosophi de astronomia id. est: Georgius Antiochenus (???? (illegible) XI) cf. Thorndike History of magic II (1923) p. 718’
