[1] The work bears no title page but appears to be an index to the contents of the German astrological journal “Die Astrologische Auskunftsbogen”, q. v. in the German periodicals section when it is ready. In view of the workmanlike production values, I suspect it was prepared by a former owner of a large set of the journal for personal private use, and was not formally published.

[2] Presumed 1940s

[3] In his introduction, Rau states that the source volume he is translating ‘has no introduction’, and he is therefore unable to say anything about its author, but he subsequently refers to him as ‘Sage Bhrugu’.

[4] A series of publications collectively edited at this time by Hans Daiber, Anna Akasoy and Emilie Savage-Smith

[5] The volume comprises a colour facsimile, Arabic critical edition, and English translation of an anonymous work believed to have been compiled in Egypt between 1020 and 1050, together with a commentary upon it and indices. The critical edition is based on the collation of nine incomplete manuscripts, primarily an illustrated one acquired by the Bodleian Library in 2002, which is said to date from the late 12th or early 13th century. The eight other partial or complete copies of the text used in the preparation of the critical edition were later, mostly unillustrated manuscripts of the 16th to 19th centuries, found in other libraries around the world.  The contents of the work include Book One: On the Heavens, whose contents are partly astrological, spanning pp. 323-414 in the English translation section of this volume. The editors have also included an extensive annotated glossary of star names featured in the text, spanning pp. 529-662

[6] A discussion of the relative election prospects for Mr. Hoover, Roosevelt, Mr. (Al) Smith, and Garner, the year before a new United States Presidency was to begin. Internal references to Hoover being the current president assuredly date the discussion (and subsequent election) to 1932

[7] An added notice reads ‘Published Quarterly’, but the content consists of fixed natal Sun sign delineations, not predictive material

[8] No authorship is stated at the beginning of this text, but the end is labelled in print ‘Notes from Grace Ellery Williams’, indicating that it may be a transcript of notes taken by a student from a lecture delivered by Williams

[9] Appears to be the automated output of an early astrological computer program

[10] A non-astrological publication based on the visions of renowned psychic Edgar Cayce. This copy was acquired through its inclusion in a mixed lot of esoteric titles

[11] Said to have been revised and expanded from the original 1959 edition entitled ‘A Psychic Interpretation of some Late-Cenozoic Events Compared with Selected Scientific Data’. The additions to the present title were made in an undeclared later printing. Other declared dates of earlier printings are 1961 and 1963

[12] The author gives no clues as to his or her identity but is presumed a loyal associate of the Professor Shearhod to whom frequent references are made in the text. This Professor Shearhod would appear to have been a consulting astrologer

[13] The text refers retrospectively to three press citations in 1928, the last of which is dated to December 29th of that year, so it can reasonably be presumed to have been published in 1929; indeed, Internet references to it are found in scanned publications from 1929

[14] US copyright records give 1934

[15] US copyright records give 1934

[16] US copyright records give 1934

[17] The author’s initials appear from the typed signature at the foot of the third leaf to be J. M..

[18] A former owner has written in pencil to the front cover ‘Manuskript für [Mond] + Tattwa’, which accurately describes a large part of the contents.

[18a] Internal evidence suggests around 1944

[18b] A series of Australian publications advertised as ‘little books of knowledge’ and covering a very wide range of factual and self-help topics

[18c] Formally, ’Translated and explained by Richard Wilhelm, with a European Commentary by C. G. Jung… Translated into English by Cary F. Baynes’. Thus, the book is based on a secondary English translation of Wilhelm’s German translation from the original Chinese. The first printing of Wilhelm’s German edition is said to have been published in the Autumn of 1929. Jung’s extensive commentary, as translated by Baynes, spans pp. 75-137 of the overall volume

[19] The central translation of the original Chinese source spans pp. 21-65

[19a] The first English edition appeared in 1931 and was also published by Kegan Paul et al.; its preface by Baynes dated March 1931 is retained

[19b] Jung’s extensive commentary spans pp. 81-136 of the overall volume

[19c] The central translation of the original Chinese source spans pp. 21-65

[19d] After the first Arkana edition of 1984; the original Kegan Paul, Trench & Trübner edition of 1931 was revised and augmented for one of 1962, incorporating amendments to Wilhelm’s translation by Cary F. Baynes on scholarly advice. It is on the 1962 revision that the Arkana edition is based

[19e] An early Sun sign synastry guide, briefly exploring all possible combinations along male-female lines.

[19f] Presumed 1931

[19g] Appears a standard-issue compilation of previously issued short introductory pamphlets on different topics, which were eventually compiled into a multi-volume hardbound course of which this was the fourth instalment and the only one to include instruction on astrology. Advertising for the bound volumes in this form is found in contemporaneous magazines

[19h] After the original edition of 1901, copyrighted by Lloyd Jones, presumed the author of this work although not necessarily and probably not the astrological one in the same volume

[19i] Also copyrighted by Lloyd Jones, November, 1900; the author of this course uses the pseudonym of “Aztec”

[19j] Copyrighted June, 1901 by the Psychic Research Company

[19k] Also copyrighted June, 1901 by the Psychic Research Company. No author attribution is suggested here

[19l] Copyrighted October, 1900 by L. B. Black. The author, presumably Black, is billed ‘A Professional Medium Under Control’ on the title page

[19m] A series of articles by Flower and other contributors compiled from the pages of ‘our magazine’. The first, by Flower himself, is referenced as having been written in in June, 1897. The other component articles carry various dates from 1897 and 1898

[19n] Date of copyright and preface thus – no separate date is found on the title page. Copyright of the Psychic Research Company, Chicago, is declared, although the author of this work is separately named

[19o] Possibly the work of Gustave-Lambert Brahy, though it might have been drafted by others working for his institute.

[19p] No earlier than 1937, this being the date of an example nativity

[19q] From internal references to dates in the late 1930s and 1940 for predictive examples, this part of the course is estimated to have been originally drafted around 1939-1940, though could be slightly later. A former owner’s inked note to the first leaf reads ‘Cours commence le 24 Février, 1960’, but this clearly relates only to the date when she started studying on it and the course itself is much older than this

[19r] Front cover title is instead ‘Typology and Astrology’

[19s] This appears to have been a memorial card issued to mark the occasion of Cumont’s death in August 1947

[19t] This duplicates the content of the folding portion of the rear cover

[19u] In advertising at the back of later works by the publisher, the true author is declared as MK Viswanath

[19v] In advertising at the back of later works by the publisher, the true author is declared as MK Viswanath

[19w] This book was supposed to be used in connection with a device called the Héméroscope Képler and was originally sold with it. The contents are elementary and mainly concerned with readings of the Sun signs

[19x] Estimated 1935-6, based on having been advertised in magazines of this time

[20] U.S. edition of the above

[20a] After the first edition of 1951

[21] After the first edition of 1949 entitled ‘Unser Thema Astrologie’, q. v. above, and the second edition of 1963, entitled ‘Das Thema Astrologie: Ein Briefwechsel’

[22] Pseud. of Georges-Marcel Mostade

[23] Library records indicate an undated first edition with the same total page count having been published in 1953. It is presumed that this 1955 edition is essentially unchanged in content

[24] The binder is labelled a “Classeur-Relieur Colma” and sourced to “26, rue Fortuny, Paris”

[25] A reference to a work referred to in internal advertising as “L’Art de l’Interprétation Astrologique” being in preparation would suggest a date not later than 1955

[25a] The advertisement on the back for the issue of “Demain” for Septembre 1935 firmly dates this printing, which is presumed to be the original one, to that time

[26] Deduced from address and internal references to be 1935-6, thus soon after the original edition above

[27] So stated on front cover although not within

[28] A series of publications collectively edited at this time by Michael Dewar, Adolf Köhnken, Karla Pollmann and Ruth Scodel

[29] Billed as the revised version of Heilen’s habilitation thesis that was accepted in the summer of 2006 by the Department of History and Philosophy at the Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität, Münster. This first volume is centred around Heilen’s critical edition, with modern German translation, of the excerpts from Antigonos featured in the text of Hephaistio of Thebes (pp. 65-186). It also includes a section on the life and work of Antigonos; a discussion of sources; an extensive catalogue of antique horoscopes (pp. 204-333), and a lengthy bibliography.

[32] A planned series of 30 publications presenting English translations and commentaries upon the Hellenistic astrological corpus. As of September 2015, only this one had yet appeared, the volume number representing its planned place in the series rather than its order of publication

[33] It is believed that all the pre-ordered copies sold in the summer of 2009 were signed thus, in personalised dedication to their purchasers

[34] A critical edition of the ancient Greek text of Anubio

[34a] A series of publications published under the patronage of the Association Guillaume Budé

[38] The core of this volume is a critical edition of the original ancient Greek text (said to have been composed some time between 276 and 239 B.C.), with facing translation (pp. 72-157), followed by a very extensive commentary (pp. 161-577)
