Bibliography of Astrology Page 39, Cooke – Cornell

Cooke, Christopher ‘Curiosities of Occult Literature’ Arthur Hall, Smart, and Allen, unclearly dated[1]. Three copies, each containing different unique manuscript insertions by Cooke, including his artwork, highlights of which are detailed in the separate description for each copy below:

  • Copy A: contains a jocular sketch of Helena-Petrona Blavatsky; a figure for the Greenwich Observatory; a large sketch of a person on horseback en route to Slough, entitled ‘Coningsby hires a hack’; a natus of Lord Brougham; two horoscopes of ‘persons burnt’; and physiognomic sketches of Aries, Scorpio and Taurus. Cloth (frayed along front hinge and slightly torn and chipped at extremities of spine ). [1] Dated 1863 in print, but apparently rebound with manuscript insertions by the author in 1878, as indicated by the added date on the spine of each copy

[2] A facsimile reprint, issued early 2000s, presumed to be sourced in another copy of the the original 1854 edition shown above

[3] Those belonging to “The Devil’s Pulpit Vol. 1” by the Rev. Robert Taylor, B. A., have been substituted. In fact, the reverse error was more truly the case, an order having been placed for the Robert Taylor book, only for its cover to be sent with the contents of the Christopher Cooke one, but the result is a complete copy of the Ballantrae Reprint edition of Cooke’s work, albeit in the wrong cover and with the wrong title page. This error was unfortunately not identified until John Ballantrae had gone out of the reprint business

[3a] This bears the address 8921 National Boulevard, Los Angeles, dating it to the period from 1929 to 1943 or later

[4] This volume begins with a study by Cooper (pp. 1-101). An English translation of Galen’s treatise “On Critical Days” follows (pp. 102-237) before a critical edition of the Arabic source text from three principal manuscripts, one at the British Library, one at Princeton University Library and one at Escorial Library (pp. 240-368). Following this is a detailed commentary on the text (pp. 369-[522)

[5] A print-on-demand reprint of the original dissertation. It was later to be officially published by Ashgate in July 2011 under the altered title: ‘Galen, De diebus decretoriis, from Greek into Arabic: A Critical Edition, with Translation and Commentary, of Hunayn ibn Ishaq, Kitab ayyam al-buhran

[6] The first printing of the revised edition but the second overall printing, completely reset from the original printing of 1982 listed above

[7] Professor of History and Philosophy at the University of California, Riverside

[8] An English translation of the seventeen Greek treatises of the Corpus Hermeticum (pp. 1-66) and the Latin Asclepius (pp. 67-92), from the Greek and Latin text established by A. D. Nock in the Belles Lettres edition of 1945-1954 (q.v. under Hermès Trismegiste below), followed by extensive annotations (pp. 93-260) and indices

[9] Additionally, 36 full-leather copies in slipcases, 412 standard hardcover copies, and 1296 paperback copies were produced to constitute the first edition of 1872 copies

[9a] A collection of twelve essays. Contributors include Lee Lehman, Benjamin Dykes, Demetra George, John Michael Greer, Eric Purdue, Al Cummins, Aaron Cheak, and the editors, among others

[10] A lecturer on Cosmology and Divination in the Mysticism and Religious Experience M.A. programme at the University of Kent

[11] Said to contain “substantial emendations” to the original Penguin / Arkana edition of 1994, including the addition of a new Chapter 13 “Images of the World” and the major reworking of the final chapter

[11a] After the original edition published by Mitchell Beazley in 1997

[12] A further publishing credit reads: “A DBP books, conceived, edited and designed by Duncan Baird Publishers, Sixth Floor, Castle House, 7576 Wells Street, London W1P 3RE”. It is not clear why the book was published by Pavilion and yet designed by another publishing company also based in London. The present edition is clearly published by Pavilion Books and is said to be the first in Great Britain

[13] A German translation of the work listed immediately above

[14] NB: There was no Vol. 2 under this title; for Vol. 2 of the same series, see ‘Magazine Articles on Astrology’ below

[15] A list of authorships and memberships follows, too lengthy to include in the main listing here

[16] The address is retained unaltered together with the original 1933 date to the title page, but the 1939 date is apparent from Henry J. Gordon’s added foreword a few pages later. It is not clear whether the book truly continued to be published by the Cornell Publishing Company at that address and distributed by Fowler in the UK, or whether the original title page was simply carried forward unaltered as a convenience

[17] The initial publication date for the third edition is given as 1973. Essentially the third edition appears to be an exact facsimile of the main text body of the first and second but with seven pages of new material by Laurel Lowell on Pluto added at the beginning, the title page reset, and the other original prefatory pages spaced out more with blanks, added half-title pages etc.

[18] A reprint around 2002 by David Roell from the third edition, but without Laurel Lowell’s foreword

[19] This is the full title to the inner title page. On the front cover, the references to the magazines in which the articles were originally published are omitted, together with the extended list of the author’s honours; but the label ‘Vol. 2’ is added, to identify the present volume as Cornell’s second published anthology of magazine articles. For Vol. 1 of the same series, see ‘Astrology and the Diagnosis of Disease’, above
