Books on Hamburg School / Uranian Astrology in the Library

Hamburg School Astrology, commonly known in English as Uranian Astrology, is a school of modern astrological practice with a number of distinctive technical qualities, among which it is best known for its use of half sums or midpoints to generate ‘planetary pictures’, its joint representation of conjunctions, oppositions and squares as fourth-harmonic conjunctions on a 90-degree dial, and its usage of eight hypothetical planets or points.

From humble beginnings as the product of a grassroots movement of technical astrologers centred upon Hamburg in the early-mid 1920s, these methods gradually gained traction, and while their early practice was largely confined to German-speaking countries, they began to spread to the United States astrological community from 1939 thanks to Richard Svehla’s publication of his pioneering translation of an early edition of the foundational book Regelwerk für Planetenbilder (first published in the original German in 1928) as Uranian System of Astrology: Rules for Planetary Pictures that year, as well as to his related teaching activities and mammoth course of Correspondence Lessons in Uranian Astrology. Hans Niggemann was another American populariser in the 1950s and 1960s. Hamburg School Astrology has now been practised in one form or another for the best part of a century.

Following many years of collecting, the international astrology library now has quite a thorough range of books and journals of relevance in both the original German and English, although there are still some notable lacks. Below is a shortlist of what you can find on the topic here if you book a pre-arranged visit (historical researchers and astrologers with a genuine interest in the topic are equally welcome to make contact).

Also held but not individually itemised above: a fairly full set of the publications of Martha Lang-Wescott, asteroid expert and Uranian astrologer

[1] Not in German library records. Presumed mid-late 1930s or possibly early 1940s

[2] This volume is divided into four themed ‘books’: Book I – Techniques of Uranian Astrology (pp. 1-76); Book II – The Annual Horoscope (pp. 77-89); Book III – Health, Astrology and the Planetary Picture (pp. 91-133); and Book IV – Horary AStrology (pp. 135-149)

[3] Translated, and also revised and updated by the authors, from the original German edition published by Ludwig Rudolph (Witte Verlag) in 1985

[4] A translation from the original German edition entitled “Vom Großen Trigon Klein Winkel”, q. v. below

[5] There are no other publication references, although this appears a suspiciously fresh copy for the date, and the possibility that it is an undeclared later reprint cannot be ruled out

[6] The DNB record supports this being the actual date of publication

[7] The first of a projected series of two volumes, the second of which seems never to have appeared although Lefeldt says in his foreword that it ought to soon

[8] However, a note at the start of the 1977 edition (q. v. below) acknowledges that owing to high demand, about 1500 copies of the pilot edition were ultimately produced, so it is less rare than the limitation notice would have one believe

[9] Essentially a reset edition of the above, with the same contents, in modern type, with more lines per page (thus the overall page count is reduced), but not professionally printed, at least in this copy: each page bears the hallmarks of monochrome facsimile reproduction from a printed master on which some pages were numbered by hand. The typesetting and editing, however, are greatly improved, the individual entries being much clarified over the original edition, and the alphabetical order being rectified in places

[10] The copyright date of 1961 from the original edition is retained, but this appears to be a later edition. The comb binding was not normal for Niggemann in the 1960s, and both the title page and the following leaf, whereon the 500-copy limitation is declared, have the appearance of being of facsimile quality, whereas all later pages are laser-printed with what appears to be a computer font of the 1980s or 1990s, and coherently paginated, unlike the erratic typescript edition listed above, which is reasonably presumed earlier. It is ultimately unclear whether this was an official issue by Niggemann himself or an unauthorised later copy, but it does not appear to be the true 500-copy pilot edition in either case – see separate entry above

[11] Niggemann acknowledges in his foreword the existence of the earlier English translation by Svehla of 1939, q. v., but refers to his own translation as an “enlarged and revised edition” with added interpretations for Pluto, Apollon, Admetos, Vulcanus and Poseidon, and with the order of the contents electively changed to reflect the “proper order of importance”

[12] A compilation of articles variously credited to four different authors: Herbert Pauels, Halle; Theodor Keysers, Düsseldorf; Prof. Wilhelm Drude, Detmold; and the editor. Some articles are not expressly attributed to an author and presumed to be by the editor

[13] Address as given on front cover; the inner copyright address is Hamburg 22. Whether or not that implies that this may be an undeclared early reprint is unclear. The 1936 date appears on the title page as well as the copyright page, however

[14] A planned series of publications, of which to the best of my knowledge this was the only one to appear, although ten years later Reinhold Ebertin would launch his own, distinctive series of publications called ‘Kosmobiologische Studien’, published by Ebertin-Verlag

[15] Library records indicate 1926, and internal advertisements agree

[16] Includes a double-page chart entitled “Ein kosmisches Kraftlinien-Feld für die Jahre 1924-1933, Hitlers Erfolg darstellend”; a printed chart entitled “Graphische Ephemeride 1934”; and a printed chart blank.

[17] The single chart is labelled “LIX”; the duplicates “LXI” and “LXVIII”. (On copy A, both the copies of LXVIII have had their centres cut out by a previous owner; but they have been retained.)

[18] Worldcat records 1984, but this might be an undeclared later printing

[19] After the first printing of 1976

[20] After the original edition by ACS Publications, 1989

[21] The foreword is dated 1978, but the DNB records 1979 for the actual date of publication

[22] After the original edition of 1982

[23] DNB gives 1977, which is supported by internal references in the publisher’s foreword

[24] Complete in 30 lessons (plus preceding ‘Introduction’)

[25] Presumed reprinted around 1969 in common with the reissued Introduction as listed above; the original text is copyrighted 1937 by Svehla in Cleveland, Ohio

[26] Hans Niggemann is the most likely bet in view of his leading the preface and inserting his own advertising at the end. He also reprinted the correspondence lessons of Svehla, q. v. above

[27] The copyright date is given as 1939; but this printing is clearly much later, and the signature of 1969 in Hans Niggemann’s advertising at the rear seems a close guide

[28] This is a later issue, as evidenced by the added note on p. 150 that Hans Niggemann died in 1985

[29] A compilation of previously published articles by the author in facsimile, produced as a tribute to him after his death. Typefaces vary according to the original source. Unfortunately, the original publication details of the component articles are not declared

[30] DNB gives 1975

[31] Advertising at the rear for transneptunian ephemerides only for the years 1928 and 1929 suggests a date of 1928, which is supported by the original copyright dating shown in the third edition, q.v. below; however, DNB records claim a publication date of 1929

[32] “berarbeitet und herausgegeben von Ludwig Rudolph”

[33] An added note reads: “Drittes bis fünftes Tausend”. After the second enlarged and improved edition of 1932, and the first of 1928, q. v. above

[34] The second printing and first in a single volume of the fourth edition, after the original printing of 1947 in ten separate fascicules, according to the foreword by Ludwig Rudolph. Lefeldt’s introduction, however, is dated 1946

[37] After the fourth edition of 1947 and its one-volume reprint of 1950, q. v. above, which seems to have provided the prototype for the text of this fifth edition, that was printed in much larger quantities. Lefeldt claims in the foreword to his “Methodik I”, q. v., that Ilse Schnitzel co-operated on the revision of the Regelwerk in 1951, though she is not credited here as having contributed to this fifth edition in any way

[38] The 7. bis 9. Tausend designation of the 5th edition is incongruously retained. This seems to be a straightforward facsimile reprint of it, and no effort has been made to update the edition number or other details

Part Two: Uranian Astrology Journals in the main library

In the late 20th century, there were two main journals dedicated to the techniques of the Hamburg School, of which one was published in German (the Hamburger Hefte) and one in English (Uranian Forum). Prior to the 1960s, there were no known journals dedicated to these techniques, but various articles by their proponents appeared in the general astrological press, especially in Germany. A compendium of Alfred Witte’s early magazine articles is found in the posthumous book credited to him Der Mensch, q. v. in the books section above. We may also have some of the original German magazines where they first appeared, but these have not yet been catalogued, and there will be gaps.

Below are detailed the holdings we have of the two main dedicated Uranian astrology journals.

Appendix: Additional Uranian Astrology Books in the Astrological Association Library

The independently developed AA Library now housed at the same site contains some of the same editions as listed above. It also contains a few editions and printings that are missing from the main library, notably:

  • Jacobson, Roger, ‘The Language of Uranian Astrology’, 1990 edition claimed to hold ‘added material’
  • Kickbusch, Arthur ‘Sonnenbogentabelle’ (Witte-Verlag), undated
  • Witte, Alfred; ed. Rudolph, Ludwig ‘Rules for Planetary Pictures’: 1959 and 1992 editions
