  1. Payment in full is required prior to the books being released for dispatch to you.
  2. For countries served by the shop with automatic shipping cost calculations, various payment options including bank transfer and credit / debit card (via Woopayments, processed by Stripe) will be provided.
  3. For countries not served by the automatic store, shipping costs will be manually calculated on request by email, but we can only accept bank transfer as we have no means of processing card payments outside the context of the store. The full list of countries served by the automatic store is given on our international shipping policy page, together with email instructions for those living in countries not served by it.
  4. Sorry, we cannot currently accept payment by Paypal for physical books. This is because of high reported rates of abuse of the disputes and chargebacks processes posing an unacceptable level of risk to our small business.
  5. You must provide a secure mailing address. Once packages from us have been delivered to the address you provided, we are not responsible for any subsequent theft that may occur by others living at or with access to the same address. If your home address is not secure for deliveries, please provide a work address or a trusted neighbour’s address that is secure.
  6. Books will be posted within two business weeks of receipt of payment, although normally within one business week. The longer allowance will only apply in exceptional circumstances such as when we are away at a conference at the time of payment or have visitors.
  7. All books for sale are at least second-hand, and many are antiquarian. Older books by their nature will tend to exhibit signs of wear and prior use. We have inspected all books for sale carefully, photographed their front covers and listed their salient condition points in their dedicated product pages within the shop, each of which is unique to a particular copy of a title. Please ensure that you have read and understood the edition and condition details to your satisfaction before you purchase any book from the shop. Failure to read these details where they have been provided is not due ground for returning books where they are as described but not as you expected.   8. All sales are final, unless books are unavailable or received significantly not as described.
  9. Books will be carefully packed by us to withstand handling in transit. This is a matter in which we have many years of experience and take pride.
  10. In the unlikely event that the package you are sent is lost or seriously damaged in transit, please contact us with full evidence and details so that we may follow up any claim with the shipping handler.
  11. On international orders, a customs declaration will be made by us to the value of the books sold, specifying the contents of the shipment as used books. We will on no account declare a lower valuation than the price paid. This is because it is illegal to declare a falsely lower valuation, and would also prevent our covering our own interests by insuring the shipment to its true value.
  12. If you purchase the books for shipping to an address outside the United Kingdom, you are solely responsible as the buyer for the payment of any taxes and customs clearance charges that may be levied by or on behalf of your national customs agency or equivalent authority, and you must be prepared to pay them. In the event that either the applicable authority, or the shipping agent acting on behalf of that authority, accidentally overcharges you, it is your responsibility to pursue any claim arising with them, without our involvement.
  13. If you refuse to pay any customs charge or fail to collect your package in good time when notified that it is available for delivery, and the books are therefore returned to us by the shipping provider, we will not be responsible for refunding your shipping costs.
  14. International shipping times vary, and could take up to two months to some countries, or longer if held up in customs, although times of 2-4 weeks are typical. Delays in transit are not a cause for compensation or the cancellation of orders.
  15. All international orders will be sent with tracking. The tracking numbers will be retained by us and provided to you for your reference. On domestic orders within the UK, tracking numbers will also be available on request, but will only record attempted and final delivery and will not give advance notice of the expected time of delivery – this is a limitation of the Royal Mail tracking service.
