Description

hb Leo, Alan How to Judge a Nativity Part I: the Reading of the Horoscope 2nd The Office of “Modern Astrology,” 9, Lyncroft Gardens, West Hampstead, N.W., London 1908 £35 Second Edition, Revised & Greatly Amplified, after the first of 1904. The definitive edition of one of Leo’s most important books for the intermediate student, in its earliest state thus. Complete in [2] + [pp. v-xvi] + 316 + [pp i-vii of advertisements] Original full green vertically ribbed cloth in good+ condition for its age, with wear to cloth at both ends of spine and 4 cm separation of cloth towards (though not at) top of rear spine hinge; moderate rubbing to middle portion of same hinge; mostly light wear to outer corners of boards (a bit more to lower outer corner of front board); slight bowing to boards; small bump to outer edge of both boards in same area, indicating a single cause; two tiny patches of superficial scuffing or staining to lower margin of rear board, and one to lower margin of front board. Blind-stamped florally-decorated bordering to both boards (the original state of this edition – it was lost from later bindings), and gilt titling to both front board and spine, are in fine condition, still strong and bright. Internally, joins between some adjacent gatherings of pages are slightly strained, especially between pp. 208-9, which would benefit from professional reinforcement with archival tape at the gutter. Internally very good, with just plain-pencilled bookseller notes to ffep; plain-pencilled page reference to rear paste-down; and old-fashioned red oval stamp of unclear meaning to blank area of title page, just touching the ‘A’ in the printed publisher name. Paper is slightly taut from many years of thermal expansion and contraction, but no permanent markings (apart from the aforementioned stamp) or other faults found. Overall, a good+ antiquarian original of the most collectible edition of this book.
