Bibliography of Black Moon Lilith, Dark Moon Lilith, Vulcan, Transpluto and Lulu in Astrology

This select bibliography combines books on Black Moon Lilith with those on Dark Moon Lilith, Vulcan and other hypothetical planets used outside the Hamburg School of astrology. For sources covering the eight hypothetical planets used by Uranian astrologers, see the separate selected bibliography of Hamburg School astrology.

While it would be preferable to have separate booklists for the very different concepts that are Black Moon Lilith and Dark Moon Lilith, in practice enough sources consider both for it to be more convenient to combine them under a single bibliography. The student is advised to check which of the Liliths each title refers to. In general, the French tradition around Lune Noire and English books using the expression Black Moon refer to the point in the Moon’s cyclical orbit of the Earth at which it is at its greatest distance from the Earth, while English books using the expression Dark Moon are referring to the hypothetical planet; but books referring just to Lilith may be referring to either of these or both, although those in English are much more likely to be referring to the hypothetical planet whereas those in German and French are much more likely to be referring to the lunar apogee.

At the end are citations of two important historical French articles to which I refer in my published essay Lilith in Astrology: Second Moon, Asteroid, or Lunar Apogee? The essay in question was first published in Infinity Astrological Magazine but is now part of my book Technical and Planetary Developments in Astrology (Revelore Press, 2025). It gives a full account of the history of the Lilith concept since the late 19th century.

In this booklist, binding format and pagination information has been retained only for booklets shorter than 100 pages. From all longer books, it has been stripped out for ease of reading and navigation.

If wishing to cite this select bibliography itself, please link to its web URL and do not copy and paste it to other online locations or publications – a lot of work goes into cataloguing these books, and all rights are reserved.

Thank you,
Philip Graves, May 16th, 2025

Important historical articles on Lilith in Astrology (selection)

Gama, Marcel ‘”Lilith” – La Lune Noire’ in L’Astrosophie Vol. III, No. 3 (21 mai 1930), pp. 105-113

Genty, P. ‘Les Planètes Hypothétiques’ in Le Voile d’Isis, 31e Année, No. 73, Second Numéro Spécial consacré à l’Astrologie (1926), pp. 72-73

[1] No authorship is stated at the beginning of this text, but the end is labelled in print ‘Notes from Grace Ellery Williams’, indicating that it may be a transcript of notes taken by a student from a lecture delivered by Williams

[2] Only pp. 39-54 belong to the article in question, the last eight pages being miscellaneous extraneous material from the same issue

[3] Translated from the original 1985 French edition published by L’Espace Bleu, entitled ‘Le Retour de Lilith’, q. v.

[4] The advertising on the inside of the rear cover suggests a date late in 1937, as one work is advertised as scheduled for publication in January 1938 but the rest are indicated as already being available

[5] There is no indication of a later printing date on this copy, which appears to be the original printing, although this is hard to determine in view of Frank Severy Publishing presiding over publications with a wide variety of dates

[6] The last printing date stated is 1969, but this copy seems likely to be a much later printing. The original copyright date is given as 1961.

[7] The date of this printing. The booklist at the front dates the previous, second edition to 1981, and the first to 1978, but mysteriously this printing has retained a printed copyright date of 1980

[8] After original printing of 1981, q. v. above

[9] Copyrighted 1974; but this second edition is from 1978 or later, as evidenced by internal references in the Introduction to the second edition.

[10] This seems to have been reprinted from Astrologie Heute Nr. 86, August / September 2000, pp. 22-3

[11] Dated 1986; but this is presumed to be the date of the original printing, of which this is a much later reprint

[12] Presumed Hans Hausmann

[13] The original title and publication data also appears in German on the following page

[14] Translated from the original Italian manuscript

[15] The first printing thus; but the work is expressly stated to have been previously published by TIA Publications in 1977. That edition, however, covered a substantively different range of dates (1883-1999), and was credited primilary to Eleanor Bach and Zipporah Dobyns, together with Michelsen (see under Bach, Eleanor, above). The present 1999 edition was evidently revised to change the range of dates covered by Rique Pottenger after Neil Michelsen’s death in 1990, although Pottenger had already been involved with the original 1977 edition too

[16] Also held, another copy, undated, publisher not specified, misbound in terms of page order

[17] This undated edition may be the third printing, because there is another after the 1918 first edition, q. v. above, that appears to have been dated 1922. The present edition is shown by the publisher address to have been published in the period from 1922 to 1939

[18] After the original edition of 1995

[19] The publication history is not declared, but library records show the original edition to have been published in 1997, with the second in 2000 and a third in 2004

[19a] This is relevant on account of its Appendix VII: Sign Rulership, and the Positions of the Hypothetical Planets Postulated by the Author (pp. 144-156). This gives details of the hypotheticals Jason, Dido, Hercules and Pluto that the author, whose real name was Duncan Macnaughton, proposed, before the discovery of the real Pluto, which he would disown as not conforming to the orbital characteristics or position of the Pluto he had proposed, with the result that he would continue to refer to his Pluto as Wemyss-Pluto.

[19b] 1929 or early 1930. It was reviewed in the issue of “Modern Astrology” magazine for February 1930

[20] The typeface, binding style and advertising matter indicate Llewellyn

[21] The second part of this work, “The Heliocentric Tables of Vulcan”, is dated 1920; but this copy was evidently bound up no earlier than the summer of 1928, because the inside of the rear cover carries a change of address notice to 8921 National Blvd., Palms, an address that became current starting with the July-September issue of the Astrological Bulletina. The internal advertising bears the older 1507 S. Ardmore Avenue address, but includes an advertisement for the first edition of Astro-Analysis, which was published in 1927. Taken together, this evidence clearly indicates that the present copy of Weston’s pamphlet was printed in 1927 or the first half of 1928, and bound in the second half of 1928 or slightly after. According to Worldcat records, there was an earlier edition of just 17 pages published in 1909

[22] After the original printing of 1979
