Binding mostly strong, but signs of strain at a few junctions between signatures at pp. 64-5, 80-1, 160-1, 176-7, 288-9, and 306-7 – these should be monitored and may eventually benefit from reinforcement with hinge tape. Front paste-down with old plain-pencilled price marking. Ffep with charming vintage finely handwritten presentation notice dated 1897 in blue ink, and a few notes, one in blue ink, the others plain-pencilled. Rear endpapers with more extensive plain-pencilled index to selected contents of volume. Small traces of black ink staining towards or on lower margins of pp. x and xii-xiii, and partly effacing one word, ‘calculated’, on p. 412. Very occasional foxing. Plain-pencilled marginal brackets spotted to pp. 371, 455, 458, 475, but no permanent deliberate previous owner markings found to any printed page. Occasional page-edges unevenly cut; small chip lost from upper outer corner of leaf comprising pp. 443-4 (far from text); two small chips lost from top edge of leaf comprising pp. 41-2 of tables in final internal work, and another from outer edge of leaf comprising pp. 61-2 of same (also far from text). Both folding plates are in excellent condition. Overall, still a good copy of this sought-after antique 19th-century edition. Condition factored into price.
