The rare original edition, predating the ACS reprint, which was in a reduced size format. Text complete in [2] + [2 leaves] + [leaves 1-44] + [leaves 46-123]. This copy without the illustration that should occur as leaf 45 | Original large-format pale green card covers in vgc- condition, with light reading crease down inner margin of front cover, peripheral browning to covers, trace of creasing to upper margin of rear cover, and light edge-wear to front cover, with a few very short tears to top edge of same. Velobind strip intact but has lost its top peg and bottom two pegs, but all pages remain solidly bound. Former owner’s tasteful printed bookplate featuring verse by T. S. Eliot to inside of front cover, alongside a dark-inked two-digit number of unclear significance. Yellow or rarely orange highlighting to selected sentences on pp. 7, 10, 11, 13, 14, 16, 21, 32, 35, 38, 42-51, 53-8, 69-71, 74-9, 88, 95-100, 102-3, 108-111, 113-4, 118; orange underlining to pp. 61-2 and 65-6; and orange highlighter used to create a marginal bracket on each of pp. 22, 56, 71, 90, 117 and 118. Clearly a well-studied copy that remains a textually complete, solid and serviceable example of the sought-after original edition of this scarce Jansky text. The text is complete and continuous from leaves 44-46. This copy lacks leaf 45, which should be an illustration – it would appear that the original owner cut it out for separate reference, but a scan of this illustration from our master copy of the book will be provided to the buyer of this copy. Still a good copy overall. Faults factored into price. |
