Alan Leo – Astrology for All Part I, 1904

£42.50

Description

hb Leo, Alan Astrology for All, Part I: Individuality and Personality as Represented by Sun and Moon (“Astrology without Calculations”) 2nd 9, Lyncroft Gardens, West Hampstead, London, N.W. 1904 £42.50 [pp. iii-iv] + [3] + [pp. iv-viii] + 253 + [33 pages of tables] + [pp. ix-xvi of advertisements]. The first full-length edition, after the original edition of 1899, which was only 104 pages + tables. Original full green vertically ribbed cloth in good- condition, with gilt titling to front board still bright and strong, and blind-stamped bordering with decorative corner florets still clearly visible to both boards; gilt titling to spine only slightly faded in places and largely intact. The very head of the spine (almost 1 cm) has been chipped away; cloth also lost from bottom few mm of spine, and there is fraying along the upper and central parts of the spine hinges, but the upper and central regions of the spine cloth have been carefully reglued to the inner spine with pH-neutral bookbinder’s glue to prevent further damage (subject to careful handling). Cloth worn from outer corners of boards, as usual with these early editions. Ffep with residue from torn-off old label and a plain-pencilled price. The internal binding has been professionally strengthened in six places between page gatherings with Tyvek book hinge repair tape, and it is now a strongly bound copy. Pages generally free from permanent markings. A few traces of old reddish-brown ink splatter to upper margins of pp. 8 and (minimally) p. 9, not reaching text. Occasional foxing. Plain-pencilled marginal bracket to p. 162. Faint pencilled (plain or possibly black) marginal annotation and cross to p. 202; similar marginal annotation with three words underlined to p. 215. No other markings or faults found. Overall, a good, carefully repaired copy of this rare very early edition of the first book in Leo’s Astrological Text-Books series, which is now fit for long-term archival. An ideal study copy for historical researchers wanting the original full-length edition. Price factors in faults.
