Fowler & Co. 1910 £45 317pp including advertisements from pp. 305-317. Original full vertically ribbed cloth in good- overall condition for its age, with chipping to top 5mm of cloth at head of spine, fraying to cloth at foot of spine and along parts of top and bottom edges of boards, and wear to cloth over outer corners of boards, lower inner corner of front board and (slightly) upper inner corner of rear board. Moderate rubbing along spine hinges and to edges of boards; traces of rippling to cloth over front board, and a few scratches to rear board. Original gilt titling to front board and spine remains pleasingly strong and bright – unusually so for such an early edition. Internally, this is a very clean copy, with almost no previous owner markings found, and no significant stains or other blemishes. I could only find a few faint marginal plain-pencilled crosses. Binding generally strong and sound – with mild straining between pp. 112 and 113 and between pp. 128-9. 1 cm tear to outer edge of final leaf of advertisements. No other faults found. Externally good-; internally near-fine. Overall, a vgc- copy of the sought-after true first edition. Price factors in wear to cloth.
