Alvidas et Al – Science and Key of Life: Planetary Influences Vol. 1 1902, Copy 2

£50.00

Description

hb Alvidas et Al. Science and Key of Life. Planetary Influences. – Vol. I 1st Astro Publishing Company, Hodges Building, Detroit, Michigan 1902 £50 [2] + [pp. iii-x] + [pp. xv-xxvi] + 244pp. The pagination on the preliminary pages of this volume always leaps from x to xv. Only the frontis. and p. i are missing from this copy. ASSOCIATION COPY. Original full cloth in good- condition, with cloth worn over three outer corners and rubbed to extremities of spine hinge, else structurally sound, but a former owner has stuck a layer of clear plastic over the spine, which makes it uglier than it would have been when new. Ffep has been glued down to front paste-down and now exhibits mild creasing. Front inner paper hinge cracked but cords holding. Interesting vintage blind stamp of the First Temple and College of Astrology, Los Angeles, Cal. to margin of copyright page (whose leaf is slightly internally torn in a couple of places, but without loss), repeated to margins of pp. 52, 120, 158 and 194. Occasional plain-pencilled underlinings and marginal brackets or ticks to printed pages, and plain-pencilled sum to rear fep, but most pages are unmarked, and no permanent markings found, aside from occasional traces of marginal staining (lower margin of p. 176 is the worst-affected). Tiny chip lost from bottom edge of leaf comprising pp. 3-4, and an even tinier one lost from same area of leaf comprising pp. 7-8. An old tear to the inner margin of leaf comprising pp. 225-6 has been repaired with clear tape by a former owner, the tape crossing but not affecting legibility of some text. Very occasional short edge-tears to a small number of other pages, far from text, and a couple of corrected dog-ears. This copy lacks the frontis. and one preliminary leaf (which is just a quotation about Nature from Humboldt), but the text is otherwise complete, and no other defects found. Overall, in fair antiquarian condition. Its visible history of institutional ownership by one of California’s earliest astrological schools gives it added interest. Price factors in faults
