E. C. Matthews – Stars of the Bible

£250.00

Description

hb/dj Matthews, E. C.; ill. Doré, Gustave Stars of the Bible [2nd] Motivation Development Centre, 209 E Washington St., Bloomington, Illinois n.d. £250 Retains the copyright date of the 1963 first edition, which was published by New Era Studio and limited to 999 hand-numbered copies. This appears to be a very early reprint, without a number. Interestingly, the original edition was in maroon cloth; this one is in turquoise cloth. But the designs are otherwise identical, including the use of gilt on the boards. Both editions are very rare and feature about 80 full-page illustrations of Biblical scenes by Doré Original very large-format full turquoise cloth in near-fine condition, with gilt titling to front board still strong and bright; small blue circular sticker to front board, and very light rubbing to extremities of spine hinges and some outer corners. In vgc- original fragile illustrated paper dj, which has substantial tears along parts of rear flap-fold; creasing and tearing to lower outer corner of rear panel; light chipping to extremities of flap-folds, and minimal chipping to extremities of spine; 1 cm tear at top of spine; and blue circular sticker to rear panel. Ffep bears long hand-inked presentation note dated 1981 from the original owner, who says the book has been in his library ‘for a long time’, to a friend he was passing the book on to at that time. The note further supports this being an early impression, probably soon after the limited first printing of 1963. Text pages and illustrations are clean and free from any internal markings I could find. Overall, this remains a near-fine copy in near-very-good original dj.
