Description

hb Green, H.S. [Alan Leo’s Astrological Manuals, No. 13:] Mundane or National Astrology 1st “Modern Astrology” Office, Imperial Buildings, Ludgate Circus, E.C., London / L. N. Fowler 1911 £75 134 pages including advertisements from pp. 126-134. Dated 1911 in print to the title page, showing this to be the true first edition. Advertising at back also shows Alan Leo’s book ‘Esoteric Astrology’ as being only ‘in preparation’. It was first published in 1913. Original small-format deep green cloth in vgc for age, with light rubbing to extremities of spine, minimal rubbing to outer corners of boards, a slight forward lean, and light scattered staining to boards. Front inner paper hinge shows early signs of partial cracking. The internal binding is otherwise sound and tight throughout, with just one hard-to-interpret anomaly found: three unterminated thread ends sticking out from the gutter between pp. 132-133. Front blank with old plain-pencilled bookseller notes. A number of pages in the book show small patches of marginal dark-staining, perhaps black ink-stained fingerprint smudges from a bygone era of heavy use of quills or fountain pens. This is heaviest at the upper outer margins of pp. 30-1, otherwise minor and only rarely touches text, without detriment to clear reading. Very occasional faint plain-pencilled marginal astrological glyphs and notes towards the end of the volume, with additional ruled plain-pencilled lines to the table of towns at pp. 124-5, but no permanent previous owner mark-up found. Creasing to upper outer margin of final leaf of advertisements. Overall, a near-very good copy of the sought-after 1911 first edition.
