Ogilvie Publishing Company, 57 Rose Street, New York | 1915 | £25 | This is likely to be the first impression because the spine is in gilt and the front board has a blind-stamped border; later impressions retained the copyright date but were printed in black to the spine and with black bordering to the front board; and others, believed still later, in a yellow cloth with black titling to front board and spine. [4] + [pp. 3-158] + [pp. 175-284] + [6 pages of advertisements] | Original full pale turquoise cloth in vgc+ condition for age, with light rubbing to extremities of spine and outer corners; tiny bump to top edge of rear board; spine slightly sunned, with gilt titling slightly faded in parts, but still clear to read; boards generally very clean for their age, with trace of rust-staining to upper margin of rear board. Page-edges rough-cut (as issued) and browned. Internally a clean, solidly bound copy with no permanent previous owners’ markings found. Unfortunately, it is incomplete owing to misbinding, lacking pp. 159-174, with pp. 175-190 in duplicate instead. The missing birthdays span August 3rd to August 23rd. August 2nd and August 24th are present in part but incomplete. All other birthdays’ text complete. Sold as a cheap defective copy of the rare, sought-after probable original printing, for its reading and study potential and its vintage charm. |
