hb Goodman, Linda Linda Goodman’s Love Signs 1st Harper & Row 1978 £125 The true first impression of the first edition, as shown by the FIRST EDITION designation to the copyright page, in combination with the catch-print that reads 78 and 1. The first impression is distinguished by a different picture of the author from the one found on later impressions to the dust jacket rear panel, and by the additional blurb about the author to same. Original full red cloth in near-fine condition for age, with light rubbing to parts of extremities of spine and minimally to tips of outer corners, and light reading creases to spine. Publisher’s blind-stamped flame emblem to front board; gilt titling and dual heart emblem to spine remains exceptionally bright and strong. In original dust jacket, which is in vgc+ condition, with moderate wear along top edges of main panels and spine, and occasional very short tears, the longest being 1.2 cm to top edge of front panel, and very slight chipping (max. 3-4mm) to three extremities of flap-folds. Internally, the book is near-fine, with inner paper hinge before half-title page cracked but webbing holding. Very slight signs of strain towards centre of inner paper hinge between pp. 418 and 419, but the binding is mostly strong. While I did not turn every one of the 1186 pages individually, repeated flicking through identified no signs of any previous owner markings. The pages appear clean and unmarked throughout, and there are no signatures or bookplates to the endpapers. It is unusual to find the first impression for sale at all, and still less to find it so well-conserved as here.
