Description
| Metal wire bound | Simmonite, Dr. W. J. | Horary Astrology – the Key to Scientific Prediction, being the Prognostic Astronomer | Early reprint thus | American Federation of Astrologers, 6 Library Court, S. E., Washington, D.C. (front cover) / The National Astrological Library, 327 A Street, S.E., Washington 3, D. C. (title page) | c. 1960s | £20 | With additions by John Story and further edited in the light of American Experience by Ernest A. Grant’. Grant comments in his preface that edits were made by him to account for the more heterogenous ethnic make-up of the peoples of the United States. It could be an interesting project for someone to compare with the original text and account for his decisions. Date from preface. The internally printed publication details would have been correct for 1950, but the address on the front cover suggests that this is an early reprint by the AFA, probably from the 1960s, of the original National Astrological Library edition. | Original large-format beige textured card covers, with 32 small holes punched in the inner margins, through each of which a single piece of metal wire has been thoroughly threaded in an arrangement that resembles twin rings through each hole, although in fact the piece of wire repeatedly doubles back on itself to form this effect. Covers in vgc+ condition, with light creasing across upper outer corner of rear cover, which has mild effects t the internal pages in the same area, and a trace of light staining to lower margin of same, else near-fine. Former owner’s vintage sepia pictorial bookplate to inside of front cover. Internally, most pages are unmarked. However, one sentence to each of pp. 131, 150, 152, 155 and 156, and two to p. 153, have been highlighted in green. Plain-pencilled marginal notes alongside the highlighted sentences to pp. 152 and 153. There is also one peculiarity to note: the page that should be printed with p. viii (part of the introduction) was originally printed blank, but the correct page was then supplied and adhered to the blank page with a weak glue, which has since lost its sticking power, so that p. viii is now loose but present, and there is toning to the central area of the leaf comprising pp. vii-viii from the effect of the former glue – which does not affect the legibility of the text on p. vii. The loose page could easily be reglued to its blank backing with non-acidic archival glue if wished. Overall, a serviceable good+ copy |
