Bibliography of Astrological Magic, Talismans and Remediation

There are various books on the library exploring relationships between astrology and magic. While most of these are historically focused, there are also some designed for contemporary practitioners. A number of books looking at the history of magic or magical practices without particular reference to astrology have also worked their way into the library over time.

This is an elementary bibliography based on searches within the overall library catalogue for keywords related to magic, talismans and remediation only. As such, it should be considered a starting point for more detailed research.

Books that are part of larger series whose series names included keywords related to magic but whose individual titles did not have generally been excluded, unless the titles themselves show a clear relationship to magic.

In the cases of source texts originally in languages such as Arabic and Latin (such as the Picatrix, and Agrippa’s De Occulta Philosophia), where academic editions of the original source texts are held in the library, these have generally not been included here, but translations into modern languages have.

Because of the length of this booklist, for ease of reading all information relating to binding formats and pagination has been cut out. This can be found in the full version of our library catalogue for older books and most academic books.

Please do not copy and paste the contents of this bibliography for publication elsewhere on the Internet. If citing the bibliography, please instead link to its URL at Astrolearn. Cataloguing these books takes time, and all rights over the contents of this catalogue are reserved.

Thank you,
Philip Graves, May 8th, 2025

[23] This volume consists primarily of a transcription and study of fragments of Judaeo-Arabic text belonging to the works attributed to ibn Qurra and Pseudo-Ptolemy that are mentioned in the title. These fragments are said to have been found by chance at the Cairo Genizah collection within the library of Cambridge University in 2007. A working English translation of the complete presumed text of the original works is provided, taken by the editors from a combination of the recently discovered manuscripts and pre-existing manuscripts of later Latin translations of both works. The Latin text is also included

This is one of the earlier pre-ISBN ones, with the chart containing the image of the body of a man on the top left of the dust jacket, partly off-page, and a caduceus towards its top right. Most printings with Magick on italics on the dj front cover have the chart in the upper centre and no caduceus, and there is evidence that they have black titling on their spines instead of gilt too, a typical sign of a cheaper reprint. The original edition was published in 1929 by Lecram, Paris

[44] After the first printing of the second revised and enlarged edition of 1997; the first Weiser edition is dated to 1994. Earlier copyright dates of 1913, 1930 and 1936 are listed, presumably representing the original publication dates of the material constituting the Weiser edition

[87] An additional credit begins: ‘Published under the auspices of Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands) and Villa Stendhal (Paris)”

[88] This translation is said to have been made from Francis Carmody’s critical edition of the astronomical works of Thabit Ibn Qurra, q. v. under Carmody, Francis J.. It appears to have replaced the previous 2005 translation by Warnock himself, q. v. below, in the Renaissance Astrology line-up

[99] The first volume in a two-volume set, said to have been “expanded” by the Fondazine Lorenzo Valle from the original English-language Johns Hopkins edition of 1985, q. v. below. It is really a vastly more ambitious production than the original edition, in that it features the original Latin and Greek source texts with facing Italian translations; and the combined page count of approx. 1050 pages reflects this.

[100] The date of the original (I) edition thus is given as 1997.

[101] The section within this volume that is entitled “Astrologia” comprises pp. [137]-243, and features extensive excerpts from Manilius together with briefer ones from Seneca, Ptolemy, Vettius Valens and Plotinus, and one referred to as “Papiro Tebtunis”.

[102] Described here as “professor of classics at the Johns Hopkins University”

The latter section comprises four essays spanning pp. 169-239 inclusive that are of relevance to astrology and its place in religion, by scholars including Francesca Rochberg and Nicola Denzey

[120] A series by the present publisher, consisting of reproductions of select old texts by different authors.

[121] After the first edition of Turner’s translation (1675), which however was not to my knowledge given the new title ‘The Archidoxes of Magic’, its title simply consisting of the list of themes starting ‘Of the Supreme Mysteries of Nature…’ so far as I can recall from seeing pictures of an original copy for sale. The new edition would appear to have been given an added overarching title as a convenience to the publisher in a time when the lengthy, rambling titles of the past had ceased to be fashionable or even marketable.

[122] Seemingly a second-generation facsimile reprint, taken from the Askin Publishers edition listed above

[123] After the first edition of 2005

[124] First British edition was 1915; whether this American edition was printed in the same year is unclear from library records

[125] A series of publications collectively edited by Richard Schikowski, who was also the publisher

[126] After the original edition of Turner’s translation of 1655

[127] Evidently also published by Ouroboros Press in 2003, and although not stated thus, presumed also from Robert Turner’s compendium of transaltions as published in 1655, in which the Magical Elements of Peter of Abano and the Arbatel of Magic were included together with Agrippa’s fourth book of occult philosophy and other works

[128] A facsimile reproduction of the first printed German translation, said to have been published in Paris in 1567

[129] Title as issued in publisher’s internal title page. A facsimile of the full original title page follows some time after, and reads: “Natural Magick by John Baptista Porta, A Neapolitane: In Twenty Books: 1. Of the Causses of Wonderful things. 2. Printed for Thomas Young, and Smuel Speed; and are to be sold at the three Pigeons, and at the Angel in St. Paul’s Church-yard. 1658”.

[130] i.e. third printing thus, after the first of 1957 and second of 1958. The text itself is a facsimile of the original edition of 1658.

[131] This is believed correct, although the nominal edition number is suspect, no earlier-numbered edition having been seen, suggesting that in fact this was the first in print. It would seem equally possible that the ‘fifth edition’ denomination was an outright lie designed to give the appearance of an existingly popular work, or that four earlier drafts had been worked on and perhaps distributed privately for comments, but not published, before this one was published.

[132] A collection of seven scholarly essays on topics connected with mediaeval astrological and divinatory books and manuscripts

[133] A series of publications collectively directed at this time by Chiara Beatrice Vicentini of the Università degli Studi di Ferrara, supported by a scientific committee of four scholars from the same institution

[146] Library records give 1923; and this appears to be the original issue, as distinguished by the gilt titling to the spine and the advertising at the back being much more limited and different from the advertisements in the two known later impressions at the same Foulsham address. The postpaid price of the Foulsham ‘New’ series of books is only 10d, compared with 11d in the later impressions. The price of the Gypsy Bijou fortune-telling cards at the back being only 2/6, compared with 3/6 in the third impression

[147] This work is not in the British Library or any other major British library, and not in Worldcat either, in any edition. This issue is believed to be the original edition from 1898 based on the internal advertising

[148] This appears to be the first impression of the Weiser edition, although the work is copyrighted 2011, suggesting an earlier publication at that date
