Bibliography of books written or published by Reinhold Ebertin, and others on cosmobiology

Cosmobiology was a term that had currency in multiple countries within continental Europe during the early-to-mid 20th century. The main focus of this bibliography is books written by Reinhold Ebertin, as well as books by other authors but published by Ebertin’s publishing house, and thus implicitly carrying his seal of approval or that of his successors who took over the Ebertin Verlag after his death. Further included are English-language books that implicitly take after Ebertin’s methods of cosmobiology including midpoints.

However, it would be a mistake not to acknowledge the contributions of the Swiss astrologers Karl-Ernst-Krafft and Adolphe Ferrière, who used similar but typically slightly different language to describe their school of cosmobiology, or those of Ine Vrabl, so their books have also been included here.

This bibliography is a long one and has been divided for readers’ convenience into six sections, comprising:

1. Books by or about Reinhold Ebertin himself
2. Other books on cosmobiology, midpoints and related themes, whether or not published by the Ebertin Verlag
3. Other books published by the Ebertin Verlag (but not obviously, if at all, on cosmobiological themes)
4. Journals edited by Reinhold Ebertin himself or on Ebertin-style cosmobiology
5. Almanacs edited in whole or in part by Reinhold Ebertin himself
6. French periodicals referencing Cosmobiologie in their titles

In category 1 I have included all editions held of the fixed stars book credited to the composite entity Ebertin-Hoffman. Although this was adapted from the original decades-earlier work of Elsbeth Ebertin and Georg Hoffman, it was edited by Reinhold Ebertin and therefore became in effect one of his works in its final form.

The division between categories 2 and 3 is not always obvious, and there could be argued cases for moving some in category 2 into category 3 or vice versa, depending on how narrow or broad a definition of cosmobiology one takes.

Please note that our holdings of Ebertin’s periodicals are far from complete, as the detailed listings in parts 4 and 5 show, but are nonetheless quite extensive and should collectively serve as a useful resource for historical researchers.

The very existence of Category 6 and the associated dates further illustrate the diversity of European astrological literature invoking the concept of cosmobiology prior to the development of Ebertin’s specific school of thought in the area.

In this bibliography, exceptionally, I have left in binding format and pagination details for the books because of the inherent interest in changes between editions as well as in the extent of the material in each title, but condition information specific to the copies in the library has generally been removed for ease of navigation and reading. For the journals, with the exception of the Ebertin-Presse-Archiv für Kosmobiologie, whose pagination has its own interesting features, I have removed all pagination details as well as condition information but retained some notes on binding format at the end of the listings for some titles.

Please also see the separate booklist of related interest on Hamburg School and Uranian astrology that was published earlier. As most interested in this topic will know, Reinhold Ebertin’s school of cosmobiology developed as an offshoot of Hamburg School techniques, and books on the latter are therefore likely to be of some interest to practitioners of Ebertin’s methods. Penelope Bertucelli’s book included here is uniquely on both lists because its title references both schools.

In his autobiographical ‘Das Schicksal in Meiner Hand’ (q. v. below), Ebertin states 1949 as the first publication date of Kosmopsychologie, although the standard cloth edition is dated in print to 1950. This may hint at the limited circulation of the present early pre-press edition in 1949, although to judge from Stiehle’s evidence, the text must have been ready in 1948

There is also a reference to a work by Philipp Schmidt entitled “Christliche Sterndeutung”, yet no reference to this can be found in German library records. The earliest book by Philipp Schmidt on astrology is “Sind Sterne Schicksalskünder” (1933); but he was still active writing about astrology into the early 1950s. My best guess at dating this work by Ebertin would be early-mid 1940s based on the poor production quality being a product of limitations imposed by the war.

[73] This edition extents to the same final pagination as that of 1981 (q. v. above), but the internal section title pages are padded out by blank pages to their reverse sides. It is not immediately clear whether cuts have been made or the text has simply been reset
