Bibliography of Electional Astrology

This select bibliography is mainly limited to books whose extended titles include keywords related to electional astrology and to works already demonstrated by the selections made from them by Benjamin Dykes and Christopher Warnock in their respective multi-author compendia of electional astrology source texts to contain a significant volume of directly relevant text. However, several other modern works recognised by their subject matter as being of an electional astrological nature have also been included.

For ease of navigation and reading, binding format and pagination details have been stripped out for all works of 100 pages or more. These details are retained in the full integrated version of our library catalogue.

Additional nominations and corrections to any mistakes found would be welcome – please email me on solger75 [at] gmail.com if you have something to contribute to this select bibliography, or any other one currently featured at Astrolearn. All nominations will be checked against copies held in the library and verified prior to implementation.

If wishing to cite this select bibliography itself, please link to its web URL and do not copy and paste it to other online locations or publications – a lot of work goes into cataloguing these books, and all rights are reserved.

Thank you,

[10a] This original Latin edition contains a treatise on electional astrology. The title has been inaccurately and incompletely rendered by Kessinger, even to the point of the author’s surname being incompletely rendered. The facsimile of the original title page reads: “Ad Astrorum Iudicia Facilis Introductio Claudio Darioto Pomarcensi Medico ac Mathematico authore. Eiusdem Tractatus De Electionibus Principiorum idoneorum rebus inchoandis. Quibus Accessit Fragmentum de morbis & diebus Criticis ex astrorum motu cognoscendis, eodem authore: Ad illustrisssimum & eruditissimum virum dominum Anthonium Themam Savium doctorem medicum Lugdunensem”. The original imprint is difficult to read in places but appears to be: “Apud Mauricium Rey, et Ludovicum Pesnet, Lugduni, 1557”

[10b] A monochrome facsimile of the original published Apud Mauricium Rey, & Ludouicum [?] Pesnet, Lugduni, 1557

[11] This work begins with Dykes’ own substantial introduction, before moving on to the excerpts and more substantial texts listed in the order shown

[11a] The date of the first is given as 1990

[12] Translated from the critical edition of David Pingree, as published in 1973

[13] Pseud. of Jean Rozières

[14] A series of publications founded by Georges Vajda, and edited at this time by Paul B. Fenton

[15] A series of publications founded by Georges Vajda and directed by Paul B. Fenton

[16] Title to front board is misrepresented as ‘Anima Astrologia or the Astrologer’s Guide’; spine legend is ‘The Astrologer’s Guide – Bonatus’

[17] A facsimile reprint of the edition of 1886, q. v. above, but with the original publisher’s advertisements removed and replaced by those for Health Research publications

[18] A reprint of the National Astrological Library edition first published thus in 1953, which was completely retyped (with more lines on fewer pages) from the George Redway edition of 1886

[19] Internally, beyond the first printed leaf, this is a direct monochrome facsimile of the 1886 edition

[20] The authorship of this work is not expressly stated in this edition, but is revealed by David Pingree in his Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit Series A, Volume 3, pp. 195-7 (q.v.). Pingree lists several different authors of this seemingly common name; but this one is said to have been the “son of Varadarya of the Bharadvajagotra and a resident of Polipakkam”

[21] The original Sanskrit text is said by Iyer in his Introduction to have been edited by Pandit Sr. Saptharishi Bhaghavathar Avl. of Tanjore. It accounts for the final 197 pages of this volume and is preceded by Iyer’s translation

[22] Said to have been first published in 1917

[23] The authorship of this work is not expressly stated in this edition, but is revealed by David Pingree in his Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit Series A, Volume 3, pp. 195-7 (q.v.). Pingree lists several different authors of this seemingly common name; but this one is said to have been the “son of Varadarya of the Bharadvajagotra and a resident of Polipakkam”

[24] After the first AES reprint of 1982, q. v. above; the date of the second is not specified. The original edition of Iyer’s translation and edition was published in 1917

[25] With additional title page to p. 77: Partridge, John, Student in Astrology ‘Mikropanastron: Or the Vade Mecum Continued. Teaching how to Judge of all Nativities and Revolutions in a shorter Method than any hitherto have Performed it. According to the Doctrine of the Learned Cyprianus, Leovitius, Origanus, Bonatus, and others; being faithfully Collected and Translated from their Works, for the Use of the young Ingenious Student’ London, 1679. With additional title page to p. 233: Partridge, John, Student in Astrology ‘Mikropanastron: Or the Vade Mecum Continued:  Briefly Handling the Doctrine of Elections, with Experiments and Aphorisms thereunto belonging’ Printed for William Bromwich, at the Sign of the Three Bibles in Ludgate-Street, London, 1679.

[26] An exact facsimile reprint of the 1911 second edition, except for the removal of the original publisher credit and imprimatur. The A.F.A. reprint was further reprinted in 2006, that time with the addition of a dust jacket

[26a] Dated 1993, but this is highly suspect in application to the present printing in view of the presence of the publisher’s web-address upon the rear cover

[27] With additional sub-title page to Book I: “Astrology Fully Vindicated and Defended from all The Aspersions and Calymnies of the Antagonists thereof: As also its Legality and Verity proved, both by the Testimony of the Scriptures, Fathers, Antients, and the confession of Councels: With a clear Vindication of the Authors Lux Veritatis, from the vilifying Reproaches of Dr. Homes and his Second; and that the purity of the Science remaineth still untainted, notwithstanding all their Reply”. With additional title page to Book II: “An Introduction to the Iudgement of the Stars. Wherein the whole Art of Astrology Is plainly Taught, and the Ground-work or Reasons thereof for the benefit of the Students therein delivered, the better to confirm them in every point thereof; as also to satisfie such who shall either enviously or ignorantly traduce or cavil against it” Printed for R. W., London, 1653. With additional title page to Book III: “An Introduction to Elections, Fully comprehending The Rules of the Ancients in Electing a Time for any manner of Work: Never before made publique in our Mother Tongue. But now (by the Blessing of God) for the benefit of all true Lovers of knowledge sent abroad” Printed for R. W., London, 1653. With additional title page to Book IV: “Astrologia Munda or Astrology in its Purity: Being a Short but Compendious Introduction to the Iudging of the Annual or Yearly Revolutions of the World; by which, as also Eclipses, Great Coniunctions, Comets, and Blazing-Stars Are Iudged (by the ordinary Course and Order of Nature) the general accidents of Countries, Kingdoms, Provinces and Cities, alterations of Kingdoms and Empires, Laws and Customs, cause of Plenty, Dearth, Wars, Peace, Health, Sickness, alteration of the Ayr, and (to be short) of all things appertaining to the life of Man in a natural way; wherein the Infinite Wisdom of God is seen manifestly in the Government of the World by the Influence and constant Harmony of the Celestial Planets and Stars; the Innocency, Legality and Purity o the Art demonstrated, and proved by Demonstration of the Inevitable Events of the Heavens, so long as God upholdeth the order and course of Nature unperverted; And the Students thereof consequently proved rather Divines then Conjurers or Practisers of what is unlawful” Printed by R. W., London, 1653.

[28] The 2nd issue of the original edition, first published 1653. This copy lacks the occasionally-present frontispiece portrait of Ramesey, which appears to be missing from the vast majority (75-80%) of surviving copies that appear for sale, suggesting that it was probably not issued in the first place in most cases. A facsimile of the frontis. is included at the start of the Ballantrae Reprint of the 1653 edition, q. v. below. There was also a 1655 imprint, which is scarcer than either of the first two (photographs of a copy at auction were witnessed by me some years ago)

[29] A facsimile reprint, issued early 2000s, of the original 1653 printing of the work above. The extended title appears identical except for the lack of mention of a “Table of the most material things contained therein” that appears at the end on the 1654 printing shown above. For the sake of avoiding tedious duplication of text, I have abbreviated it here. The imprint is shorter than on the 1654 printing, reading simply: “Published by Authority. Printed for Robert White, London, 1653”. This facsimile lacks the last five pages of the index. The final errata page that followed them in the 1654 printing is also not present here. John Ballantrae appears to have removed removed the blanks from some of the leaves between the internal ‘books’, modifying the pagination there over the 1654 edition.

[30] Completely reset in modern type, with 2455 added footnotes

[31] After the first printing of 1975, q. v. above

[32] Title to dj front cover is extended to ‘Robson’s Astrological Series: Electional Astrology’; yet in this case there is no mention of the alluded-to series in or on the book itself

[33] A monochrome facsimile reprint from the early 2000s by the late David Roell

[34] A compilation of Dykes’ translations from the Arabic of ‘The Introduction’, ‘The Fifty Aphorisms’, ‘On Questions’, ‘The Book of Choices’, ‘On Times’, ‘On Nativities’, and ‘The 66 Sections’, together with a short anonymous work called ‘The Connections of the Lord of the Ascendant’ said to have been annexed to manuscripts of ‘On Nativities’, and suspected by Dykes as having been authored by Māshā’allāh

[35] A facsimile reprint, issued early 2000s, of most of another copy of the work above, but without the original title page and all from pp. 438 to 525 (which are tables). I have reproduced the simplified title from the cover here

[35a] The title on the main inner title page. On the front cover, it is additionally prefixed with ‘How & When to Plant! or’ […]

[35b] Dated 2001; but it is unclear if this truly relates only to the 1st printing, as seems likely

[36] Credited as Jyotisha Praveena, Jyotisha Visharada, Jyotisha Kovida & Jyotisha Vachasati

[37] Credits continue: Jyotisha Kovida, Jyotisha Vachaspati & Jyotisha Booshana

[38] A compilation of extracts on electional astrology topics from facsimiles of ten different 17th century English astrological works, as detailed below

[39] Except for those sources expressly referenced with footnotes here, all the sources used are found in full in the same editions elsewhere in this catalogue, to which entries the enquiring reader is referred. Except for Ramesey’s book, two pages of original source text are presented side-by-side on every one page of this facsimile edition. The paginations given are for the pages in the original source editions, excluding reproduced title pages (which are unpaginated). Thus, the true number of pages filled in the new, overall unpaginated edition is roughly half the number indicated, except in the case of Ramesey, where it is unchanged

[40] From the first edition of 1691, bearing the publication credit: “Printed for Matthew Street, London”

[41] From the original edition bearing the publication credit: “Printed by J. Cottrel, for Ri. Moone and Steph. Chatfield; at the seven stars in Paul’s Church-yard, and in the middle of St. Dunstan’s Church-yard, London, 1654”

[42] From the original edition bearing the publication credit: “Printed by John Windet, for William Cotten and John Tapp, London, 1609”

[42a] Revised and expanded from a much shorter publication ‘Zodiacal Timing’ published in 1976

[43] The original publication date of the third edition of this volume is unclear. There is no relevant foreword to it by Zoller, his foreword to the second edition instead being duplicated in this copy, but it might have been published as late as 2004 because there is no indication of an earlier printing and the overall third edition is said to date from 2002-4, while the first two volumes thereof are known to have been published in 2002
