Bibliography of the Fixed Stars and Constellations in Astrology
This select bibliography is centred upon books that give information pertaining to the use of the fixed stars and constellations in astrology, but also includes ones that are looking at traditional beliefs and lore connected with the stars. It does not presently include most general titles that happen to feature some treatment of the fixed stars without specifying this upon their overall title page. Many traditional astrology books include some content on the fixed stars, and to check them all and feature all those that have any would be a very lengthy undertaking. The researcher on a quest for historical material from primary sources is advised to look systematically through all published sources from the periods of interest.
Not all books included here will prove equally pertinent or fruitful to the seeker after practical readings of the fixed stars and constellations for astrological purposes. The focus of several works is historical and academic. I advise the consideration of this select bibliography as a starting point for further research and investigation into individual titles of possible interest.
Virtually all information on binding format and pagination has been stripped out, with exceptions made for a few academic journal offprints to show that they are just brief papers. Several of the more obscure listings by the scholars Wolfgang Hübner and Wilhelm Gundel fall into the offprints category, but because they are relevant to the subject at hand, I’ve included them among the proper books. Full details are given in the main integrated library catalogue.
If wishing to cite this select bibliography itself, please link to its web URL and do not copy and paste it to other online locations or publications – a lot of work goes into cataloguing these books, and all rights are reserved.
Thank you,
Philip Graves, May 10th, 2025

[0a] A workmanlike monochrome facsimile reproduction of the original edition whose publication credits read: “Published for the Oriental Translation Fund of Great Britain & Ireland, by William H. Allen and Co., 13 Waterloo Place, Pall Mall, London, Publishers to the India Office, 1879”
[0b] A full facsimile of the original 1899 edition, q.v.. This reprint is undated in print, but library records indicate 2010
[0c] A reprint of the first retitled Dover edition thus of 1963. This facsimile lacks the original title page and two other leaves that should precede the table of contents, as well as the final unnumbered leaf that should follow p. 563. The introduction has been repaginated accordingly, and a catalogue of the publisher’s books follows. For the original edition, see under title ‘Star Names and their Meanings’ above
[1] It is not clear if this date pertains to the present or only the first edition
[2] DNB gives 1952
[3] DNB gives 1951
[4] This appears to properly belong to the following book in the series, ’Fixsterne in der politischen Astrologie’, q. v.
[5] After the original edition of 2002
[6] The author is described on the front cover as co-founder and minister of the Unicorn Ashram, which appears to be a church in Oceanside
[7] A Jungian astrological work, not just general mythology
[8] The contents of this volume, and the front cover, appear to have been produced by photocopying the equivalent pages on another bound copy, bearing facsimile hole-punched marks on the front cover and many pages. But whether this is how the author published at least one batch of his books, or whether copy might be an unauthorised duplicate, is not clear. No library records or other Internet references to the work could be found at the time of writing, and it is suspected of having been produced in very small quantities
[8a] An offprint from Illustrierte Deutsche Monatshefte. Library records indicate 1899
[9] The core of this volume is a catalogue of medieval manuscripts to the year 1200 that contain representations of the constellations (pp. 179-566). The featured manuscripts are found in 68 different libraries. Seven chapters of related studies and short essays precede this catalogue.
[10] This volume is given over entirely to reproductions of select illustrations from the manuscripts catalogued in the first one. In all, 77 illustrations are reproduced in colour, and 1005 in monochrome
[11] The contents of this first volume from pp. 13-143 are a series of historical essays in German. The remaining contents of this volume are an annotated catalogue of the first 67 manuscripts (of 145 featured in the work as a whole) from the period 1200-1500 that depict the constellations
[12] The contents of this second volume from pp. 553-953 are the continuation and conclusion of the annotated catalogue of constellation-depicting manuscripts, comprising manuscripts 68-145 inclusive. A bibliography and several indices conclude the volume
[13] The contents of this third and final volume are meticulously labelled illustrations depicting the constellations that have been reproduced from the manuscripts catalogued in the first and second volumes. In all, 135 colour illustrations and 1259 monochrome illustrations are featured, thanks to many pages containing multiple illustrations
[14] As dated on front cover. The inner title page is dated 1916
[15] Owing to a clerical or computer system error, the title presented to the front board and spine is simply ‘Abhandlungen’, but the full original title is retained in facsimile within
[16] A hardbound reprint, in 2010, of what appears to have been a 1920 printing or binding by Verlag der Bayer. Akademie der Wissenschaften, München of the 1916 edition of the study itself.
[17] After the first edition published in Heidelberg, August 1917; second, Heidelberg, November 1918; and third, Hamburg, Setember 1926. The first two editions were much slimmer works
[18] Essentially a photocopy of the 4th edition (q. v. above), but with the addition of updated bibliographical content by Hans-Georg Gundel
[19] A combined facsimile reprint, issued early-mid 2000s, of the original texts separately published in five different issues of the Proceedings of the Society of Biblical Archaeology: April 5, 1892 [Part I]; May 2, 1893 [Part II]; June 6, 1893 [Part III]; Jan. 8, 1895 [Part IV]; and Dec. 3, 1895 [Part V]
[20] A reference to a Babylonian cuneiform tablet identified here as the “Tablet W.A.I. V, 46, No. I”
[21] A combined facsimile reprint, issued early-mid 2000s, of the original texts separately published in three different issues of the Proceedings of the Society of Biblical Archaeology: Mar. 3, 1891 (Remarks on the Euphratean…); Jan. 14, 1890 (Remarks on the Tablet… Part I); and Feb. 4, 1890 (Remarks on the Tablet… Part II)
[22] Apparently the 22nd impression of the Kregel Publications edition, whose original printing date is not specified. The Kregel edition is based on the original edition of 1893, q. v. above, but with all the non-folding colour plates replaced by simple monochrome facsimile illustrations on plain paper, and many of them moved by a few pages compared with their placing in the original editions
[22a] In spite of the pretensions of its title, only a small number of introductory chapters to this book actually consider the relevance of the stars and constellations to astrology at all. Most of the text is a simple primer of the planets in the signs and in mutual aspect
[23] The author, a woman, is said to hold “a doctorate in classical studies from the University of Southern California”
[24] This is probably an undated reprint. The advertisement at the back refers to a website that seems unlikely to have existed as early as 1997.
[25] After the original edition published by Mitchell Beazley in 1997, q. v. above
[26] Presumed the original edition of the 2nd edition, thus published in or shortly after 1901. Dalton’s earliest editions of his ‘The Spherical Basis of Astrology’ were also published in Boston.
[27] Presumed an undated later reprint from the 2nd edition (q. v. above) that was originally published in 1901. The Macoy Publishing and Masonic Supply Co. was active in publishing from New York during a wide range of dates spanning 1904 to 1953 at least, according to Worldcat records; but their other issues of publications by Joseph Dalton are credited to their operation in Richmond, Virginia. There are no obvious clues to the date of this printing, but in view of the ephemeris not having revised to include years beyond 1948, it cannot be later than this and seems most likely to date from the 1910s along with the first Macoy Publishing issue of Dalton’s “The Spherical Basis of Astrology”, which was published thus in 1911
[28] An extract of an unidentified magazine, consisting of two successive astrological articles within it
[29] Another article by Dennewitz called ‘Praktische Astrologie’ was dated to a magazine from 1961 in a bookseller’s catalogue online, and this one must be close
[31] Swiss library records estimate a broad range of 1930-1950. Yet it cannot predate 1941, in view of an internal literary reference to an edition of “Wiederholte Erdenleben” by Emil Bock published by Urachhaus, Stuttgart, which appeared in 1941 (the earlier edition of 1932 was by another publisher in Stuttgart). There is also a reference to a work by Philipp Schmidt entitled “Christliche Sterndeutung”, yet no reference to this can be found in German library records. The earliest book by Philipp Schmidt on astrology is “Sind Sterne Schicksalskünder” (1933); but he was still active writing about astrology into the early 1950s. My best guess at dating this work by Ebertin would be early-mid 1940s based on the poor production quality being a product of limitations imposed by the war.
[32] This perplexing author attribution, not the surname of any indivdual, is explained in the foreword. The work is described as an adaptation of the earlier work in the 1920s of Elsbeth Ebertin and an astrologer referred to here as Georg Hoffmann (chiefly “Sternenwandel und Weltgeschehen”, q. v., although note that Hoffmann used the initial L. in that instance) with additional examples by Reinhold Ebertin. Walter Koch is also credited with numerous improvements in the foreword, although he does not get an official author credit
[33] After the original edition of 1969, q. v. above
[34] An English translation of the original German edition “Die Bedeutung der Fixsterne”, q. v. above
[35] Confusingly, while Banks is credited as the translator on the title page, Linda Kratzsch is credited as the translator on the copyright page. Since Kratzsch is not mentioned in the 1971 edition, q. v. above, it is presumed that the copyright page is incorrect in this instance, and that this was a carry-over from the equivalent page on other AFA editions of Ebertin translations for which Kratzsch’s services really had been employed
[36] After the first English edition is of 1971, q. v. above, and second of 1973
[36a] After the original edition of 1993
[37] Ibid.
[38] German library records give 1885
[39] Library records tentatively suggest 1898 or possibly 1897
[39a] A series of publications edted by G. J. Toomer of the History of Mathematics Department, Brown University, together with an advisory board of five
[40] Added note beneath reads: ‘Für Großbrittanien und seine Kolonien: Williams & Norgate, 14 Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London W.C.[;] Für Amerika: G. E. Stechert & Co., 129-133 West 20th St., New York’
[40a] After the first edition of 1936
[40b] This article is incomplete, the gathering ending during the section ‘Kometen (Liste)’, without Gundel’s name having appeared under a part of it. It is presumed that the later leaves up to and including his name have been lost from this collection

[46] A collection of thirteen scholarly papers by as many different scholars, including the editors, of whom Hadravová alone provides two
[47] Perplexingly, this volume has been issued with three different ISBNs relating to these different nominal publishers, but on this issue, only the ISBN for the Scriptorium edition appears on the barcode on the rear cover
[47a] Stated as being the transcript, edited by the author, of a recording of a lecture delivered by the author at The Town-Hall Metaphysical Library, San Francisco, May, 1950
[48] Hand-dated “Sept [19]62” by a former owner
[49] A series of publications edited by Donald Davidson, Jaakko Hintikka, Gabriël Nuchelmans, and Wesley C. Salmon
[50] This volume was edited posthumously by Humphreys from the manuscript notes left behind by Hanson
[51] Apparent Indian reprint of the above
[51a] This work is divided into two main parts entitled “I. Teil. Beschreibung der Handschriften” (extending from pp. [1]-90) and “II. Teil. Bescrhibung der Bilder” (extending from pp. [91]-208). There are numerous references to astrology in the text
[52] A print-on-demand publication; this copy printed August 2023
[52a] The earlier part of this volume features a complete edition of the Latin and (on facing pages) Picardish source texts of the anonymous De Stellis Fixis, in Quibus Gradibus Oriuntur Signorum, spanning pp. [36]-91. Seven further, shorter, earlier texts are then edited under the collective heading of “Der einzelnen Schichten” (“the individual layers”), each being preceded by an introduction. These texts would appear to be being cited as probable sources for the content in De Stellis Fixis. They appear under the following headings in the table of contents: I. Paranatellonten (Teukros); II. Einzelgrade; III. Helle, dunkle und leere Grade (Abu Ma’sar); IV. Wetternotate; V. Planetenbezirke (Kritodemos); VI. Gradbezirke mit Namen; VII. Einzelsterne (Ptolemaeus). The Teukros and Kritodemos texts are edited in Latin and (facing) Greek. Under section VII, despite the table of contents having promised Ptolemaeus, a short text attributed to Rhetorius is edited in Latin and (facing) Greek. Sections II, III, IV and VI are edited in Latin only. Two short ppendices featuring further Greek source text, attributed to Kritodemos and Abu Ma’Sar respectively, complete the volume
[52b] The main part of this volume is dedicated to commentaries on the seven shorter texts featured in Band I (q. v. above)
[52c] A series of publications founded by Dieter Wuttke but jointly edited at this time by Annette Gerok-Reiter, Reinhold F. Glei and Ulrich Pfisterer
[53] The authors are revealed in this volume to have been a father-and-daughter team
[54] The introduction is signed in print December 21, 1938, so 1939 would be a reasonable guess at the date of publication
[55] On the title page, the first of these addresses is given; on the copyright page, the other. This might suggest that it was an undeclared reprint were it not for the advertising on the rear cover, which gives both addresses in parallel, stating that the New Janpath Market address is the ‘show room’ and the Ved Mansion address the ‘head office’ for the publisher, which seems also to have traded as Lakshmi Book Store
[55a] No earlier than 1993, as shown by the internal bibliographical references up to and including that year
[56] A print-on-demand publication; this copy printed early 2020
[57] After original publication in 1969 and reprinting in 1972 and 1974
[57a] After the original Czech edition published by Artia Prag in 1968. No printing dates are given for the previous German editions
[58] Ibid.
[59] The earliest edition recorded in libraries is dated to 1971 but credited to Kuthur Subbaraya Iyer Krishnamurti. It would appear that the present volume is a reprint of this after K. S. Krishnamurti’s death.
[60] After the 11th edition of 2009. No earlier edition details are given

[61a] This is a very fresh copy; and it is not clear whether or not it is an undeclared recent printing, although there is no printed evidence for it being so (for instance, the advertising on the rear cover does not include any publications beyond 1959), and it might just be a copy that had languished in storage, unsold, for a great many years
[62] A collection of 28 studies by the author previously published in assorted journals and other books, and one previously unpublished
[63] Essentially a set of ephemerides for eleven select fixed stars, positions shown at 50-year intervals from 1500-2000
[64] Said to have originally constituted part of a doctoral thesis on the Latin vocabulary of astronomy, submitted to the Sorbonne on 11th December 1970.
[65] A reprint of the edition first published in 1977
[66] Title to front board is misrepresented as ‘Anima Astrologia or the Astrologer’s Guide’; spine legend is ‘The Astrologer’s Guide – Bonatus’
[67] The professional name of an unidentified male astrologer
[68] No copyright date is given. A print-on-demand publication, this copy purchased new in 2021.
[69] The true first issue, as evidence from the original owner’s name dated October 1947 to the ffep on this copy.
[70] This issue seems likely based on the design, which has elements in common with the original 1947 edition and with that of 1968, to have been published in the 1950s or early 1960s. Interestingly, the added advertising at the end is for the then newly-published first edition of ‘The Ascending Sign’, which is promised to have ‘big pages’. This testifies to the existence of a much earlier edition of this title than the well-known A5-sized one of 1970.
[71] Reprinted in a smaller size format after the original large-format edition of 1947
[72] 80 of the illustrations from the Doré Bible are said to have been selected and reprinted in this volume
[73] The core of this book is a simple modern primer of natal astrology by Matthews, with the Doré illustrations on facing pages serving purely decorative roles, although there are some sections of text connected more directly with the Bible
[74] Adapted from a lecture delivered on Setember 7, 1974, apparently to the San Francisco School of Sidereal Astrology, of which the author was Director
[75] With separate title pages to each of the four component books, situated at p. [1] of each of the four main separately paginated sections.
[76] Above the original printed address has been printed in correction: 11, Rue Bois-le Vent
[77] A vast improvement on the original first edition of 1937, which in its original incarnation featured just four latitude sheets and was therefore much less versatlie and precise. The present specimen is complete in its original box with all the latitude cards, and later optional declination card and fixed star overlays that were not available in 1943. Duplicates of many contents are also included as a result of an earlier purchase I made of a set of the cards without the original device
[78] On the box, this is referred to as “Le Canevas du Ciel Zodiacal sur lequel on peut placer les planètes à une date donnée en longitude et en latitude”
[79] On the box, each one of these is referred to as “Le Sensitif (Maisons Astrologiques) Pour la Latitude Donnée”. They are designed to be mounted on the plinth beneath the rotatable clear solid plastic wheel
[81] After the first of 1990
[82] A collection of 24 separate essays, including an extensive one entitled “Celestial Influence – the Major Premiss of Astrology”, which spans pp. 243-298
[83] It is not clear how these figures have been derived, since the number of plates is 57, excluding those on ordinary paper in the text, which corresponds correctly to the index of pages with one exception: the promised ‘Chariot’ at p. 69 is only a small in-text illustration and not a plate.
[84] The third edition is dated 1980, and no further date is shown. This copy was purchased new in the mid-2000s and might be a later undeclared reprint, although it is also possible that it comes from old stock of the 1980 printing, warehoused at the AFA over many years
[85] A reprint of the above
[86] D.N.B. gives 1935
[87] A print-on-demand publication; this copy printed September 2022
[88] The author’s full name is alluded to on the copyright page as being Susan (Radhe) Pfau
[89] Completely reset in modern type from the text of an early edition
[90] The bulk of this book is a monochrome facsimile reprint of the main contents (albeit without some of the preliminaries) of the originally published works (q.v. above); Gilbert adds a three-page foreword
[91] Presumed contemporaneous with the third edition of Volume 1 from the same source, thus circa 1954
[92] Presumed contemporaneous with the other two volumes from the same source, thus circa 1954, although it might be slightly later
[93] A very large-format, heavily illustrated book focused on old artistic depictions of the constellations, with text on their historical mythology. Translated from the Italian first edition entitled “Le dimore del cielo”, published by Novecento Editrice, Palermo, Italy, 1987
[94] A pseudonym of David Parkes
[95] After the first edition of January 1991, with a further reprint in 1994
[96] After the first edition of July 1994, with a further reprint in 1999
[97] After the first impression thus of 1988; the original cloth edition, q. v. below, was published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1961

[99] A detailed exposition of the supposed astrological influences of seven fixed stars in the sign Aries according to different sources, including astrologers [Iris] Vorel, [Vivian] Robson, [L. H.] Weston, [E. C.] Matthews], [Jerry L.?] Keane, [Robert] Deluce, [Nicholas] DeVore, [Eric?] Russell; [Reinhold] Ebertin; [Paul] Brachard; [W. J.] Simmonite; and [George] Noonan. Also cited as sources are the following names I have not been able to pin down: Wynne; Hammer; Lucati; a Cockbain; and Smollin. There is a Venosto Lucati who wrote some historical studies in the 1960s in Italian (but of what relevance is unclear); and a Franz Hammer who wrote a biography of Kepler in German and presented an edition of his Harmony of the World in the same language (again, of unclear relevance). Possibly Wynne may be a misspelling of Wynn. But the Cockbain and Smollin are very difficult to identify. The book launches directly into the first fixed star with no introduction to identify the sources referred to only by their surnames. At the end of the sourced material on each fixed star is a generally much longer section headed ‘General’ that appears to represent the author’s own interpretation. This book was the first in a planned series of twelve publications, one dedicated to each of the signs. It is not known how many of them were in fact produced, but whether the series was ever completed is doubtful. There are no records of any copies on Worldcat
[100] The preface is dated 1939, but COPAC gives 1946. It would seem possible that the book was ready in 1939 but published in 1946 owing to the intervention of the Second World War.
[101] The preface to the second edition is dated December 1962, and its publication to 1963, with subsequent reprints in August 1963 and March 1964
[102] The dates of the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth reprints respective are given as March 1966, June 1966, December 1967, April 1968 and July 1969. For the dates of the earlier printings of the second edition, see the footnote corresponding to the entry for the third reprint above.
[103] His credits continue: ‘Herausgeber von Science and Astrology; Präsident der Britischen Gesellschaft Wissenschaftlicher Astrologen’
[104] Translated from the second English edition of 1963 as The Fixed Stars and Your Horoscope, after the original edition of 1946
[105] The preface is dated March 10th, 1959
[106] Believed 1935, originally. However, the text calls for a violet line marking the ecliptic on each graph, yet here the graphs are entirely in monochrome, suggesting that there may have been a limited first printing in 1935 in which the ecliptic lines were printed in violet, then a more cheaply produced printing at a later stage, possibly but not necessarily in the same year
[107] Library records give 1935
[108] DNB gives 1927
[109] This edition not found in Karlsruhe Virtueller Katalog, so cannot readily be dated; but it is a much later facsimile reprint of the original Theosophisches Verlagshaus edition shown above, estimated 1990s or 2000s
[110] Expanded from the original Bd. 3 of 1928
[110a] Appears to have been issued to accompany a large star map illustrated by the painter Walter Roggenkamp (1926-1995). The map itself is not held in this collection
[111] A work looking in detail at the ancient mythology of thirty-six constellations, which are distributed for the purposes of the organisation of the book among the twelve signs of the zodiac, each sign being accorded three constellations to represent its different decans
[112] These would appear to originally have been tipped in at the front paste-down and rear paste-down respectively, but the glue was weak and they have both worked loose
[113] The typeface, binding format and advertising, however, clearly indicate the Llewellyn Publishing Co.
[114] Internal advertising for Llewellyn George’s “Powerful Planets”, marking it as a new release, date this printing to around 1924 when the aforementioned book was first published. However, see below for an earlier issue around 1920. The earliest issue of Weston’s pamphlet on the Fixed Stars that I’ve been able to verify to assuredly contextually verify to date is its appearance as issue No. 1 of his short-lived magazine “The Astrolite” (q. v.) in 1908. This said, in his introduction to the much-expanded 1937 edition of Weston’s work on the fixed stars (q. v. below), Llewellyn George claims that the first edition pamphlet was first published in 1906, i.e. two years before The Astrolite. It may therefore be that the first issue of The Astrolite was itself a reissue of the pamphlet first published then, though there are no library records on Worldcat for any such early edition – or even for the present one or that shown immediately below
[115] The typeface, binding format and advertising clearly indicate the Llewellyn Publishing Co.
[116] The internal advertising bound in with this copy indicates 1920 – there is an advertisement for the 1920 edition of the Moon’s Sign Book and one for the first edition of “Health and Attainment through Cosmic Vibrations”, which was published in 1920.
[117] A seeming offprint from Volumen Nonum, 1950 of Gandavensis, Georgius Sarton, ed. ‘Osiris: Commentationes de scientiarum et eruditionis historia rationeque’
