Bibliography of Sports Astrology and Gambling Astrology
Distinct from although of related interest to financial astrology and stock market astrology (see separate booklist for them via the embedded link) are the spheres of sports astrology and gambling astrology. The distinction lies in the fact that these disciplines seek to predict the outcomes of competitive sports or of gambling games that take place at a distinct point in time, which is very different from monitoring the changes to the values of stocks, shares, commodities and currency markets over a lengthy period and looking for astrological factors that tend to support rises or falls in their values.
As a result, I have compiled this separate booklist on sports astrology and gambling astrology, although a small number of titles will be found to overlap with those in the financial and stock market astrology bibliography.
While many of the titles, including Sepharial’s famous The Silver Key, are specific to horse racing, there are also books covering a wider range of sports in the literature, as well as several on lotteries and even Roulette games.
I have thrown in the relevant documents from Michel and Françoise Gauquelin’s research into sports champions for good measure as I think they may also be considered somewhat enlightening by whose who like to bet on sports in an astrologically informed manner.
Disclaimer: I am myself emphatically not a gambler or a betting person and never have been. My interest in these topics is therefore purely theoretical and intellectual, for one thing, and guided by my desire as a librarian to give a complete representation of astrological literature in my library, for another. I would advise those who do like to bet or gamble to consider the contents of these books as significantly experimental and certainly not as a sure guide to success in these pursuits. The listing of books below does not constitute an endorsement, and I can accept no responsibility for the consequences of anyone applying the ideas in these books to real financial transactions in related areas.

Chadbourne, Arthyr ‘Astrological Cues for Horse Racing’ Astro Analytics Audio, 1992. White cassette in clear plastic case
[1] According to Kim Farnell, this was a pseudonym used by the notable theosophist Alfred Percy Sinnett
[2] The original edition of this book presenting astrological and numerological ideas in relation to horse racing. An abridged edition of 88 pages, without the tabulated data on active horses that fill the main appendix, was published in about the late 1920s.
[3] The copyright is attributed to Éditions S.N.P., but the imprimatur agrees with a printing date of 1947
[4] Internal evidence suggests probable publication in 1919
[5] DNB records give 1948
[6] A later issue of the above, as shown by the advertising on the inside of the rear cover for the first 46 Sonderdruck in the series
[7] On title page it is given instead as Lower Prel
[8] A recent facsimile reprint, received new in 2016, of the original stated third edition published at Panjrapore Buildings, Karachi, dated September 1947. On this copy, every facsimile page has been overlain with the web address of the reprint publisher at diagonal angles, obscuring several characters of text on about eight lines per page. Though it is mostly possible to decipher what the incomplete words should read, some figures are also obscured
[9] Revised from the third edition entitled ‘Picking Winners in Races’ (q. v.).A further note to the title page reads: ‘In it are incorporated: All Handicap: Numerological & Astrological Secrets Discovered By Me During My Over 30 Years’ Racing Experience To Pick Winner In Each Race’
[10] A further note to the facsimile title page reads: ‘In it are incorporated: All Handicap: Numerological & Astrological Secrets Discovered By Me During My Over 30 Years’ Racing Experience To Pick Winner In Each Race’
[11] Described in the author’s preface as a revision of the third edition of July, 1964, which bore the title ‘Picking Winners in Races’ (q. v.), in the light of further researches by the author in 1966 and 1967. No mention of any fourth edition is made
[12] A recent facsimile reprint, received new in 2016, of the edition originally published by the author in 1970 at 201, Shuvaji Nagar, Bombay-13 (India). On this copy, every facsimile page has been overlain with the web address of the reprint publisher at diagonal angles, obscuring several characters of text on about eight lines per page. Though it is mostly possible to decipher what the incomplete words should read, some figures are also obscured
[13] A custom-bound monochrome facsimile, estimated 1980s / 1990s, of the original edition published by Éditions de la Revue Demain, 4, Avenue de Sumatra, Bruxelles, 1938. This facsimile is presumed in the absence of any publication details to have been manually produced on a photocopier and then privately trimmed and bound
[14] Privately sold by the late Tom Gillen, son of Jack; presumed jointly published by them
[15] Not before 2003 or after 2006. The introduction notes that this revised edition was prepared from a copy of the original edition that [Jack and Tom Gillen] “located” in 2003, albeit one lacking pp. 17-18 and 77-8
[16] Presumed a joint publication of Jack and Tom Gillen. It is a combined facsimile reprint of parts of three former publications by Jack. These begin with a reprint of an article said to have first been published in Jack Gillen’s magazine Astrology Researcher in 1977, entitled “The Astrological Factors in Predicting Pro and College Games” (pp. 1-72). Next comes thirty pages of excerpts from the first eight chapters of Jack Gillen’s book “Key to Speculation for Professional and College Football”, first published in 1979 by Jupiter Publications of San Antonio, Texas, as a 159-page book. Finally, there is a reprint of an eight-page supplement to that book first published in 1980 under the name ‘A.T.S.A.’.
[17] The book is copyrighted 2019, but it is not apparent whether or not a limited hardback edition was printed then
[18] The contents are mostly statistically analytical and discursive, but pp. 100-2 are dedicated to astrological considerations
[19] This work is very scarce, no doubt thanks to having been originally marketed at the exorbitant price of £100, which was presumably intended to keep the information exclusive. It attempts to illustrate the applicability of selected astrological methods to the prediction of horse-racing events.
[20] The “Heft 1” label is found only on the front cover, not on the internal title page
[21] It belongs to the book and was probably originally bound in
[22] Further bound with the I. and II. Teil of Prof. Dr. Johannes Riem’s “Die Astrologie und wir”, q. v.
[23] This added subtitle appears only on the front cover, not on the internal title page
[24] The only available library records do not give a date. But the advertisements at the rear show dates to 1977 for the serial magazines features; and the author’s signature on this copy is also given as 1977, which can be presumed correct
[25] This note concerns the private printing and is supposed to be filled in with details of the number of the copy of the book it is enclosed within, but as this copy is not from the limited run, it has been left blank. The equivalent note would appear to be missing from the other copy held
[26] A reprint, guessed from the 1990s or late 1980s based on the style of the print of the AFA’s address within, of the original edition first published by Peter Edwards Inc., 1975
[27] Estimated to date from roughly 1976-1982. It refers to the A.F.A. having taken over Nagle’s book “Astrologer’s Handbook to Gambling” (q. v. above) by this time, and since the original edition of that book was published in 1975, it cannot conceivably predate 1976 and is likely to be somewhat later.
[28] Page 12 is directly backed onto page 10. While there is no missing leaf, page 10 ends in a comma. It could be that the book was misprinted without the original page 11, in which case all copies may be equally affected, but it is also remotely possible that the comma is a typing error and that there is merely a mistake in pagination.
[29] After original printing of 1994
[29a] An Internet-era print-on-demand edition, after the original printing of 1981, this copy purchased new in 2020
[30] Expanded with a new chapter from the original 1934 edition shown above, which was already being advertised from March, 1935 in “American Astrology” magazine
[31] This publication was advertised and sold by Stuart. Its true author is unknown but is presumed to have been an associate of Stuart, if not Stuart himself under a pseudonym. Stuart’s address as given in the stamp is Sunnyside, Paddington Grove, West Hove, with the final line beyond this obscured by a later sticker of American mid-20th-century astrological and occult bookseller D. G. Nelson
[32] The contents consist of a compilation of five articles by the author previously published in the Astrological Magazine in May 1941, April 1943, October-December 1940, June 1943, and June-August 1941, together with three additional chapters
[33] After the first edition of 1947, the text of which is said to have been reproduced with no changes in this edition
[34] Imprimatur indicates 3-38, i.e. March 193
[35] A facsimile reprint of the original British publication of Nichols & Co., 1908. It would appear to have been a small-format book in view of the large type size on the reprint and line count of just 21 lines per page
[36] British Library records give 1913
[37] This second edition has had the chapter ‘The Law of Values’ cut out (the concept of which had been transferred to the dedicated monograph of that name in the intervening years), and is the basis for the later 10 & 11 Red Lion Court printing, q. v. below
[38] The ’Silver Key Astrolabe’ is shown by early advertisements to have been separately available from the publisher even for the original edition of the book, and may even have been issued with the book in some instances, but has not often survived in circulating second-hand copies of any edition more than a century later
[39] Appears an early undated reprint of the 1919 second edition, predating the change of address to 10 & 11 Red Lion Court
[40] A facsimile reprint, issued early-mid 2000s, of the second edition of the original work, whose original date is not shown internally or in online library records but is now known to be 1919 (see entry for original printing above)
[41] This edition, with its revised subtitle, is evidently a later re-issue of the second edition of which the Ballantrae Reprint above was a reprint. Its internal structure matches that of the second edition reprinted by John Ballantrae, but apart from the change in subtitle, the foreword has been modified and is now written in the collective voice of the publishers (Foulsham). This would strongly suggest a printing date after Sepharial’s death in 1929, although the publisher address proves it cannot be later than 1939
[42] Exceptionally, the publisher’s address is not given on the title page in this edition; but it is provided in advertisements at the back, limiting the dating of this edition to 1922-39.
[43] In the period 1922-39, as shown by the publisher address
[44] A pseudonym of Bernd Unglaub, according to German library records
[45] German library records give 1929
[46] The pseudonym of an unidentified author
[47] Said to be the expanded second annual edition of this work. The contents in practice are a combination of astrological horse racing information to page 85 and from pp. 171-6, with a length general section entitled “Your Good Days in 1969” for the 12 signs of the zodiac, spanning pages 86-170
