Bibliography of Chinese Astrology and Divination

The English-language literature on Chinese astrology was virtually non-existent prior to the 1970s and extremely limited between the 1970s and the 1990s, with most of the books published in the name of Chinese astrology being limited to character portraits based on the 12 animal year signs, only a few of them subdividing the readings by element. Derek Walters was one of a very small number of western researchers who attempted to describe Chinese astrology more fully in his succession of books on this theme in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1999, there also appeared the Complete Astrological Handbook for the 21st Century by Anistatia R. Miller and Jared M. Brown, which gives a concise but detailed technical treatment of several different world astrological traditions including Chinese astrology.

These volumes, however, were rare outliers in an otherwise spartan literary scene that seemed to view Chinese astrology as little more than a novelty and, by paring it down to the animal year signs, reduced it for mass-market accessibility purposes to a paper-thin pastiche of the authentic tradition, a light social evening-ready alternative to western Sun-sign astrology in effect. In truth, only since the start of the 2010s have more serious books on the range of Chinese astrological traditions started to appear from other sources such as Lily Chung and Jin Peh.

The Yijing or I Ching, in contrast, had already entered English-speaking consciousness in the late 19th century thanks to multiple early printed English translations appearing well before 1900, notably those by Canon McClatchie and James Legge. There was then a relative lull during the early part of the 20th century before the retranslation into English by Cary F. Baynes of Richard Wilhelm’s early-20th-century German translation at once heralded and sparked a new wave of interest starting in the 1950s. English-language books on the Yijing veritably proliferated in the 1970s and continued to appear in the 1980s. While most of these were non-academic, in the decades since, there has been a new wave of academic translations and commentaries, including those that have sought to isolate the underlying pre-Confucian Zhouyi that was later incorporated into the Confucian body of literature known as the Yijing. Although the Yijing is not strictly speaking astrology, it is such a fundamental component of the divinatory tradition of Chinese culture that, in the context of an international astrological library that seeks to represent the relevant traditions of all major global cultures, it arguably deserves proper representation.

A few other Chinese divinatory traditions, notably the T’ai Hsüan Ching and the Ling Ch’i Ching, are also represented by a small number of books now held. In this page you can see a shortlist of all books on Chinese traditions held in the library as of the end of November 2025. In addition to those on Chinese astrology, the Yijing, the Zhouyi and other Chinese divinatory traditions, there are some classic editions of other books traditionally regarded as Chinese classics included as relevant cultural background reading.

The library’s holdings on these topics are far from comprehensive, and almost entirely restricted to English-language editions and commentaries; but within these parameters, it has been my aim as librarian to secure as many as possible of the more scholarly, influential and highly-regarded books as well as a selection of popular ones.

Given the recent surge in academic scholarship on Chinese divination and associated publications, it is expected that further relevant scholarly books will appear in the years and decades to come, and it is hoped that these will also be added to this section of the library by whoever may be its keeper at each point in time.

[0] Billed as an edited, annotated translation from a manuscript whose title has been rendered into English as ‘Ho Map Lo Map Rational Number’

[1] After the original edition published by Routledge & Kegan Paul in 1976

[2] After the RKP hardback edition of 1976 and first RKP paperback impression of 1979. It is not immediately apparent how extensive the purported additions between the 1979 and 1980 printings are

[3] Formally, ’Translated and explained by Richard Wilhelm, with a European Commentary by C. G. Jung… Translated into English by Cary F. Baynes’. Thus, the book is based on a secondary English translation of Wilhelm’s German translation from the original Chinese. The first printing of Wilhelm’s German edition is said to have been published in the Autumn of 1929. Jung’s extensive commentary, as translated by Baynes, spans pp. 75-137 of the overall volume

[4] The central translation of the original Chinese source spans pp. 21-65

[5] The first English edition appeared in 1931 and was also published by Kegan Paul et al.; its preface by Baynes dated March 1931 is retained.

[6] Jung’s commentary spans pp. 81-136 of this edition

[7] The central translation of the original Chinese source spans pp. 21-65

[8] After the first Arkana edition of 1984; the original Kegan Paul, Trench & Trübner edition of 1931 was revised and augmented for one of 1962, incorporating amendments to Wilhelm’s translation by Cary F. Baynes on scholarly advice. It is on the 1962 revision that the Arkana edition is based

[9] Kong is the only credited author, and only of the volume ‘The Romance of Chinese Writing’ – all the others are anonymous

[10] All volumes are distributed by the Quon-Quon Company in the U.S.A.. Some of the early ones are copyrighted by H. T. Morgan, suggesting a different original publisher.

[11] The English translation is by Baynes from the starting point of the German translation by Wilhelm of the original Chinese source text

[12] After the first printing of April 1950 and second of April 1952

[13] The ninth impression of the third edition, revised and enlarged, which was first published in 1988, following on from the first edition of 1980 and second of 1982

[14] After the first edition of 1993

[15] The main content is said to be an authentic translation of an ancient Chinese text called xie-ji bian-fang shu, which he has translated as The Art of Scheduling and Positioning

[16] A German translation of the originally English-language title ‘The Moon Year: a Record of Chinese Customs and Festivals’, which was apparently first published by Kelly & Walsh, Shanghai, in 1927, although one Worldcat record instead attributes publication to Routledge, leaving the true publication history of the book unclear

[17] After the original edition of this translation, by the same publisher, of 1937

[18] No authorship is declared on the title page, but the copyright is attributed to Alan Butler, and Worldcat records indicate his birth year as 1951, the same year declared in records for Tung Jen, which appears to be a purely made-up pseudo-Chinese alias

[19] A retitled monochrome facsimile-based reprint of a work originally published as ‘Chinese Thought’ in 1907. The subject-matter is truly much broader than Chinese astrology, with chapters on Chinese Script, Chinese Occultism, Zodiacs of Different Nations, and some facets of ancient Chinese history.

[20] The edition history is not declared either; and there is no main title page in the book, so the title is drawn from the front cover

[21] A print-on-demand publication; this copy printed in 2025

[22] A series of publications jointly edited at this time by Stephen Angle, Andrew March and Ian Shapiro

[23] Translated from the edition with commentary of Cheng Yi, said to have been an 11th-century Chinese educator

[24] After the original paperback edition of 1988, q. v.

[24a] This is reportedly an antiquated transliterated form of the name Zhu Xi, which form is preferred

[24b] A projected series of publications collectively edited by John Chaffee

[25] A print-on-demand book; this copy printed in 2025

[26] An English translation, largely undertaken by Peh, of Chung’s original book whose Chinese title is transliterated as Ren Ren Ba Zi, and which is said to have been published in 2012

[27] An English translation, largely undertaken by Peh, by Chung’s original Chinese-language book on this topic published in 2006.

[28] Amazon records indicate publication in May 2014, which seems credible

[29] An English translation, largely undertaken by Peh, of Chung’s original Chinese-language book on this topic published in 2014

[30] This is not a reprint of any other translation by Cleary, and seems instead to be his own condensed interpretation of the meanings of the hexagrams especially prepared for this budget-priced series of miniature editions

[31] Retains only the original copyright date of 1992, but this is the 13th impression thereof

[32] The translation of an annotated edition of the I Ching prepared by a Taoist scholar named Liu I-ming in 1796, which includes Liu’s commentaries on the Overall Images and Mixed Hexagrams, which are said to have been added to the I Ching by Confucian school commentators.

[45] A collection of ten essays by different scholars and teams of scholars, following on from a lengthy joint introduction by the editors, who also jointly contribute one of the main essays, the other nine of which are all written by different individual scholars. Although the geographical focus in this case is South-East Asia and not China, it is part of the same academic series as some books focused on Chinese traditions and may be relevant background reading.

[46] After the original edition of 1985 and subsequent reprint in the same year

[46a] Reproduced from the original edifion of 2008, which was entitled ‘Simply I Ching’ and published by Sterling / Zambezi Publishing Limited, Devon, in 2008

[59] A revision, with new preface by the author, of the original paperback edition published in 1983

[60] The book also records an earlier copyright date of 1985; it is not clear to what edition this relates

[62] A series of publications collectively edited at this time by Chen Zhi, Nicholas Morrow Williams and Adam C. Schwartz

Each section has its own added introduction

[64] The author’s introduction is dated January 1895, but the title page is undated on this impression. It is impossible to tell from library records whether this is the first impression or an early reprint.

[65] The title page is undated and there is no impression number given. This appears to be the first edition, but this is unproven.

[66] A print-on-demand publication; this copy printed July 2022

[70] An undated facsimile reprint of the original PhD dissertation of 1985

[71] One of twelve volumes in this series. However, the content of each appears to be identical except for a short chapter dedicated to prognostications on the animal sign allocated to the individual volume – in this case, spanning pp. 23-42. The main text extends to p. 248 and is followed by 200 pages of tables. It is to be regretted that the publishers did not see fit to include the unique material on all twelve signs in a single volume, although this might have extended its length by 220 pages.

It is to be regretted that the publishers did not see fit to include the unique material on all twelve signs in a single volume, although this might have extended its length by 220 pages.

[72a] A compendium volume that combines the individual readings for each of the 12 Chinese animal years from the author’s 12-volume paperback Authentic Chinese Horoscopes series of 1987 with the hundreds of pages of repeating content, including tables, that was alike in all twelve volumes in that series. This compendium edition effectively makes the bulky and repetitive original 12-volume edition redundant by eliminating its duplicative tendencies.

[73] A series of publications collectively edited by Barend J. ter Haar and Maghiel van Crevel, in co-operation with a team of five other scholars

[74] A compendium of 20 studies by 21 different scholars including the editor. Some of the studies concern astrology

[77] A compendium of 12 essays by different scholars, including Lu, prefaced by a lengthy introduction by Lackner

[78] This is a much more wide-ranging study of traditional Chinese forms of divination than the title suggests, also including chapters on I Ching, Palmistry, Feng Shui and Face-Reading

[79] After the first of 1994

[80] The first UK edition, after the original US edition of 1979, which was published by Harper & Row, New York

[81] After the original edition of 1861, which appears from library records to have been self-published by Legge from Hong Kong

[82] This title page is followed on p. [243] by another one labelled ‘Vol. IV. – Part II, containing the Second, Third, and Fourth Parts of the She-King, or the Minor Odes of the Kingdom, the Greater Odes of the Kingdom, the Sacrificial Odes and Praise-Songs; and the Indexes’. It would seem likely that this Volume was originally published as two separate volumes, which were combined for this reprint.

[83] This title page is followed on p. [411] by another one labelled ‘Vol. V. – Part II, containing Dukes Seang, Ch’aou, ting, and Gae, with Tso’s Appendix; and the Indexes’. It would appear that originally this Volume may have been published as two separate volumes, which have been combined into one in this reprint.

[84] As evidenced by the extended pagination of the initial Roman numeral-denoted pages, this edition contains an added 65-page scholarly introduction by the two Chais, spanning xxvii-xxci, as well as a briefer initial ‘study guide’. Some of the original fold-out plates have been reduced to fit normal pages in this edition.

[84a] Edited from the original two-volume edition of 1885 entitled ‘Li Ki’, which has been reproduced here in facsimile form after the added lengthy introduction by the editors

[85] This part was first published as a stand-alone volume in 1879, and retains Legge’s preface with that date

[86] This part was first published as a stand-alone volume in 1882, and retains Legge’s preface with that date

[87] The page facing the title page lists a pending application for an ISBN. The modified notice was originally pasted over the top of this, but with weak glue, and has since detached.

[88] These Chinese characters are as printed, representing the Chinese title of the work

[89] A facsimile reprint of the original edition published by American Presbyterian Mission Press, Shanghai / Messrs. Trübner & Co., 57 & 59 Ludgate Hill, London, 1876. The source copy for this facsimile appears to have had quite a bit of neatly ruled underlining inside, which is therefore retained here.

[90] The first impression of the Penguin edition is declared to have been published in 2015, but this copy was bought new in 2025, and is likely to have been printed since 2020, although no revised date is declared for it. After the original Viking Penguin hardback edition of 2014

[91] Publications surmised thus from the catch-print, although it is not possible to distinguish for certain between the impression numbers and the years of printing as they lie within fairly similar ranges. The book is copyrighted 2006, and it seems rather more likely to have reached its 11th impression by 2023 than its 23rd by 2011, especially given that this copy was purchased new in 2025
