[1] Comprises excerpts from C. Heydon Junior (1792); Zadkiel (1842); Cardan; Pseudo-Ptolemy; the Rev. John Butler (1669); Ptolemy; and John Gadbury

[2] Clearly from the address, as printed on the inside of the front cover, which serves as the title page, this copy was bound up between November 1920 and mid-1928, although the work was originally published in 1915 according to library records. The publisher was in Portland up to and including the October 1920 issue of the Astrological Bulletina, q. v., before moving to its present address in Los Angeles from the November 1920 issue, and would stay there until the summer 1928 issue of the Bulletina thereafter. There are no advertisements present by which to date this copy more exactly.

[3] (q. v.). An early astrologer to President Ronald Reagan

[4] On all volumes in this series, this subtitle appears only on the front cover and not on the inner title page

[5] The copyright date is given as 1933, peculiarly in view of later lessons in the series being copyrighted 1932

[6] In this case, the date of the original edition is not given

[7] The original copyright date is given as 1932

[8] The original copyright date is given as 1932

[9] The original copyright date is given as 1932

[10] The original copyright date is given as 1941

[11] A work of New Thought and self-help, without significant astrological content, but provides relevant context showing the author’s broader esoteric beliefs and publishing interests

[12] The title page on this edition gives the currently available edition of ‘Practical Astrology for Everybody’ as the third, which supports this being the 1913 edition of this work. Both earlier and later editions of the work known in this edition as “Horoscope Indications” were instead called “The Student’s Chart Reader”. The present edition is the earliest in this collection, but later ones are held under the other title, q. v. below

[12a] Copyrighted 1920, the original printing date for the first issue of this first edition. However, this copy has been bound with later advertisements from as late as 1927, when Llewellyn had moved to 1507 S. Ardmore Avenue, Los Angeles. It further features a notice of a coming change of address on January 1st, 1929 to 8921 National Blvd., Palms, adhered to the inside of the rear cover, so it was almost certainly sold or prepared for sale in 1928.

[12b] Perhaps because of the unusual internal reinforcement of the binding, the bookseller described the covers as a facsimile of the original ones. However, sourcing another copy of the original scarce volume at a later date in order to secure a facsimile would appear to be an extraordinary length for a past owner to have gone to, and the fact of the coming change of address notice adhered to the inside of the rear cover being from 1928 strongly indicates against this. What is, however, possible is that the covers were made up by Llewellyn George’s offices themselves in 1927 or 1928 in an unusual way at the time that the up-to-date advertising was introduced and added to the original text of the book from 1920

[13] Copyrighted 1930, the original printing date for the first edition under this title, which is expanded and renamed from the earlier, briefer 1920 edition “How Planets Affect People” shown above. The internal advertising matches the 1930 copyright date. However, this copy has been bound up in the 1960s, as shown by the publisher address on the inside of the front cover: 100 South Wabasha St. Paul 7, Minn., an address the company did not move to until after its purchase by Carl Weschke in 1961. My records for the Astrological Bulletina support its still having been based in Los Angeles in 1959, several years after Llewellyn George’s death and two years before the purchase of the company by Weschke. The advertising for the Moon Sign Book on the inside of the front cover of this copy further indicates that it has been in publication for ’60 Years’. Even if this is an approximation, it tallies with a 1960s date for the binding, given that the first appearance of the Planetary Daily Guide for All was in 1906. It would appear most likely that the sheets used in this copy were original but that the binding was made in the 1960s and that the aim was the efficient commercial disposal of old stocks by the new owner of the company.

[14] Worldcat gives 1944 for the only edition held, but that is certainly much too late for this one. Internal advertising referring to the A-Z Delineator as a 400-page book shows that the 1923 edition was current, so this cannot be later than 1927, and is most probably close to 1924 in view of the first edition of “Powerful Planets” being announced in it too

[15] The edition number is not stated in the text but was deduced from the dates listed in the tenth edition, q. v. below, and from library records.

[16] The dj is unmarked except for a six-pointed star design surrounded with hard-to-read tiny text that includes ‘Astronomical Solunar Cycle Science’. It is not clear whether this was issued by Llewellyn.

[17] The publication date for the first edition is given as 1940

[17a] The “New Improved” element in the title of this publication is not an indication that it is a later edition of this work by Llewellyn George. It is the first edition. The “New Improved” part of the title is evidently designed to differentiate it from the existing “Perpetual Planetary Hour Book” by Ernest S. Green (not in this collection to date) that had been in print for well over five years already at that stage and can reasonably be presumed to have been well-known in American astrological circles in 1907, although there are no copies on Worldcat at the time of writing. (It was previously advertised for sale in at least two popular American astrological periodicals: “Star of the Magi” and “The Adept”.) George gives no credit to Green for the idea for the title of his book, even though it is quite evidently copied from it.

[18] The copyright date and manifest printing date of the main pages. This was George’s second published book apart from his almanacs, after the original edition of “Practical Astrology for Everybody”. However, this copy has been bound up, although in the original printed covers of the Portland School edition, with advertisements on smaller paper bearing the name of the later Llewellyn College of Astrology, which was not founded before 1912 following George’s departure from the Portland School at the start of that year. This copy must therefore have been bound up no earlier than 1912. Llewellyn College of Astrology stickers have also been glued down over the original Portland School of Astrology publication details on pp. 1 and 3 within, concealing also most of the original credit related to the Portland School reading “I. Hulery Fletcher, Manager and Director”. The credit naming Fletcher as the director of the Portland School on the front cover remains fully visible. Following George’s cutting of his ties with the Portland School around January 1912, Fletcher continued to run it on her own for some time, although George took his publications with him to his own independent venture.

[18a] The only earlier date given is the original copyright date of 1907. This is likely to be the third official edition, although no edition number is stated here, in view of documentary evidence placing the second not later than 1912 (see footnote relating to the insert in our copy of Raphael’s Almanac 1905 in English Almanacs section). The design is only slightly modified from that of the first. Like the first edition, the title bears the epithet “New”. From the fifth edition of 1929, this was removed. See under “Improved” above

[18b] The internal title page is dated 1922; but this copy has been bound up with later advertisements from 1927, as shown by the inclusion of an advertisement for the first edition of Astro-Analysis, q. v. above. It cannot be significantly later than this, however, because the address in the advertising at the back is for 1507 S. Ardmore Avenue, an address that was current only until the end of 1928, besides the fact that the fifth edition under the revised title (without ‘New’) was launched in 1929

[18c] Presumed 1917. Retains copyright notice for 1913, 1914 and 1915 on front cover, suggesting that it had evolved and been offered with new subscriptions to the Astrological Bulletina at least since some time in 1913

[18d] Described as ‘a combination of the 12 cell salts in the same proportion as contained in healthy human blood’. Llewellyn was a self-declared agent of this mineral supplement product at the time on behalf of its third-party producer

[18e] There is no sign of a stub of any removed page; and the fact that the page count including the advertisements adds up to (111 -2 +19) 128 strongly suggests that the error lies in the pagination, as 128 pages was a more common length for a printed book at this time than 130

[19] Copyrighted 1924; but this copy has been bound up with later advertisements from 1927, as shown by the included advertisement for the first edition of Astro-Analysis, q. v. above. It cannot be significantly later than this, however, because the included advertisement for the A-Z Horoscope Delineator gives the page count for the 1923 edition, which was superseded by a much longer edition in 1928

[20] Copyrighted 1931, the evident original date of appearance of the second edition; but this copy has been bound up in much later covers by the publisher, showing the address 100 South Wabasha Street, Saint Paul, Minn., an address it did not move to in Llewellyn George’s lifetime. The advertising on the inside of the rear cover is identical to that for the copy of “How Planets Affect You” discussed above, dating the bindnig assuredly to the 1960s, although, as with the aforementioned copy of “How Planets Affect You”, the sheets used for the book itself appear to be original to 1931, the advertising at the rear matching this dating

[21] Over the top of this imprint to the title page has been pasted a later Llewellyn College of Astrology sticker, indicating that this copy was unsold at the time of George’s severing of his ties with the Portland School and establishment of Llewellyn in 1912. The first and second editions of “Practical Astrology” are not recorded in Worldcat; nor are they present in this collection, but the first edition had certainly been published during 1907 at the latest, since it was advertised for sale in the September 1907 issue of “The Adept” and is also listed in the 1907 first edition of George’s “New Improved Perpetual Planetary Hour Book” (q. v. above) as already having been published

[22] Worldcat records show this edition to be copyrighted 1925. However, this copy must have been printed and bound around 1927 because the advertising at the rear includes the book Astro-Analysis, first published in 1927. It cannot be later than the summer of 1928 because the advertising bears the S. Ardmore Avenue address for the publisher, which was only current until then

[23] The copyright is credited to him, although there is no author attribution on the front cover and it would seem plausible that there were others from the so-called “Heling Hand” Department working in the background on the text towards this publication

[24] The full extended title appears only on the front cover; there is no inner title page in this edition
