[1a] A series of publications founded by Georges Vajda and directed at this time by Paul B. Fenton, supported by a team of three editors

[1b] This volume, the last in Sela’s series of critical editions of the extant Hebrew works of Ibn Ezra, comprises Hebrew editions with facing English translations of the Book of the Beginning of Wisdom and the Book of the Judgments of Zodiacal Signs, supplemented by 285 pages of scholarly end-notes and 166 pages of appendices.

[2] With separate title page to [p. 5]: Levy, Raphael, Professor of Romance Languages, University of Baltimore “The Beginning of Wisdom, An Astrological Treatise by Abraham Ibn Ezra: An Edition of the Old French Version of 1273, and an English Translation of the Hebrew Original” Baltimore, 1939. With separate title page to [p. 237]: Cantera, Francisco, Catedratico de Hebreo, Universidad de Madrid “The Beginning of Wisdom, An Astrological Treatise by Abraham Ibn Ezra: An Edition of the Hebrew Original of 1148”

[3] The original Hebrew text, presented in reverse order in accordance with Hebrew writing custom, thus with the pagination moving from end to start

[4] “Translated and Annotated by Meira B. Epstein; Edited with Additional Annotations by Robert Hand”

[5] The only volume to appear in this series

[6] “Edited from Hebrew Manuscripts, Translated and Annotated by Meira B. Epstein; Edited with Additional Annotations from the Latin Translation by Robert Hand”

[7] A collection directed by René Alleau

[8] This French edition has been translated by Halbronn directly from the medieval Hebrew, under the supervision of Professor Georges Vajda.

[9] This French edition has been adapted by Halbronn from a 1273 translation ‘en langue romane’ by Hagan le Juif.

[10] Or an uncannily good imitation thereof, as the case may possibly be

[11] Ibid.

[12] Described in the preface as a 10th century author from Baghdad

[13] The connection between the institute and the university is not explicitly clear; the university is only mentioned on the front cover, and ‘Bellaterra’ is only mentioned there too.

[14] A most unusual pagination system designed to distinguish this pagination from that of the main source text that follows. Why the conventional Roman numeral system was not used is not apparent.

[15] i.e., in this instance, from p. 80 to p. 5, in reverse sequence, these pages comprising the original Arabic source text, to which the final single-sided leaf is the title page

[15a] Oliveras, the editor and translator of this volume, is described as a professor at the University of Barcelona with a doctorate in the History of Science

[15b] The present edition consists of a scholarly annotated critical edition and separate modern Spanish translation of the commentary by the medieval Islamic scholar Ibn Qunfud al-Qusantini (1339-1407) on the Uryuza fi ahkam al-nuyum of Ali b. Ali l-Riyal (c. 1100). The main paginated part of the volume comprises a study, the Spanish translation, and a bibliography, while the secondary paginated part comprises the annotated critical edition of the original Arabic text

[15c] These pages in descending order, since the Arabic text is presented from back to front at the rear of the volume, as is customary

[15d] This translation is said to have been made from Francis Carmody’s critical edition of the astronomical works of Thabit Ibn Qurra, q. v. under Carmody, Francis J.. It appears to have replaced the previous 2005 translation by Warnock himself, q. v. below, in the Renaissance Astrology line-up

[16] “Translated & Edited with a Commentary by Chrostopher Warnock, Esq. from the Royal CXVIII Manuscript of the Latin Translation of John of Seville”

[16a] A facsimile reprint of the original Weiser edition of 1996, q. v.

[16b] A fascimile reprint of the original Weiser edition of 1992, q. v.

[17] A series of publications presenting the Arabic critical edition and annotated English translations of the component books of the Rasa’il Ikhwan al-Safa’, a famous compilation of knowledge believed to have been produced in Iraq around the tenth century C.E.. It consists of 52 epistles divided into four parts covering the themes of Mathematics (fourteen epistles), Natural Philosophy (seventeen epistles), Sciences of the Soul and Intellect (ten epistles), and Theology (eleven epistles).

[17a] This epistle is both astronomical and astrological in its content. The Arabic source text appears at the end of the volume and is presented in reverse order, in the conventional manner for Arabic books, so one can read it by opening the book at the end and progressing a page at a time towards the middle. The forward-arranged half half of the book comprises chiefly an introductory essay (pp. [1]-19), the English translation of the text (pp. [21]-89) and appendices, notably one presenting variant manuscript readings of the Arabic source text and their English translation

[17b] See note 17 above

[18] These epistles include Epistle 36 on astrology, the others being philosophical and cosmological

[19] I.e. 198 pages in reverse numerical order, from p. 202 to p. 5, in Arabic numerals, these pages containing the main text in the original Arabic

[20] This edition is retyped by Farnell, with 161 added annotations, from a stated “seventh edition corrected” of 1683, whose full title is given thus: “The Book of Palmistry and Physiognomy – Being Brief Introductions both natural, pleasant and delectable, unto the art of chiromancy, or manual divination and physiognomy; with circumstances upon the faces of the Signs – Also, canons or rules upon diseases or sicknesses. – Whereunto is also annexed, as well the artificial as natural Astrology – With the nature of the Planets – Written in Latin by John Indagine priest and translated into English by Fabian Withers – The seventh edition corrected – London, Printed by J.R. for T. Passingers at the Bible on London Bridge”. COPAC also traces a seventh edition of 1676 (thus predating the ‘seventh edition corrected’), a sixth edition of 1666, a fifth edition of 1664, and unnumbered editions of 1656 and 1651, under this title. Earlier English editions of the Withers translation instead bore the name “Brief introductions, bothe naturall, pleasaunte, and also delectable unto the art of chiromancy, or manuel divination, and physiognomy: with circumstances upon the faces of the signes. Also certain canons or rules upon diseases and sickenesse. Whereunto is also annexed aswel the artificiall, as naturall astrologye, with the nature of the planets”, and were published in 1558, 1575, 1598, 1615 (the stated fourth edition) and 1633. It would appear therefore that the 1683 edition was in fact at least the eleventh overall printing of the Fabian Withers translation of this once-popular book

[21] Over the original printed publisher name and address has been adhered a sticker reading ‘For Sale by Dr. Sydney H. French, Dealer in Books on Occultism and Mysticism, 2407 Seventh Ave., New York City’.

[22] A monochrome facsimile reprint of the original edition published Noribergae, in officina Ioannis Montani, & Ulrici Neuber, 1548

[23] The last two pages are a mirror of the first two: keys to the glyphs for the zodiacal signs and planets

[23a] The authors are revealed in this volume to have been a father-and-daughter team

[23b] The introduction is signed in print December 21, 1938, so 1939 would be a reasonable guess at the date of publication

[24] A compendium of nine studies by different scholars, including Antonio Panaino. Subjects include the diffusion of Mesopotamian astronomy and astrology in India; astrology and cosmology in Dante’s time; Dante and astrology; Ficino and astrology; and Pontano’s writings on astrology. All text is in Italian
