Charles Carter – A Concise Encyclopaedia of Psychological Astrology 1924, Copy 1

Description

hb Carter, Charles E. O. A Concise Encyclopaedia of Psychological Astrology 1st W. Foulsham & Co. Ltd., 10 & 11 Red Lion Court, Fleet Street, E.C.4, London 1924 £50 The true first edition of Carter’s first book, and the only one to bear this form of the title. It is extremely uncommon, and a valuable collector’s item in any condition. Original full red cloth in fair condition, with fraying to cloth along upper and lower-central parts of front hinge and to a tiny part of middle of rear hinge; and with a few small patches of quite heavy surface wear to both boards; the rear board in particular looks as if it has come under attack from a smallish sharp implement in several places at some point in the past, for reasons unknown, and two of the blows have pierced the board and left a slight internal tear to the rear free end-paper, with traces of indentation and slight creasing in the same spot to the last few leaves before this (in one case, as far back as p. 141), but of no real significance and without loss. Front board very stained (could be improved with the right cleaning solution), but gilt titling still clear. Gilt faded from spine, but spine and rear board both look clean for their age. Internally, the binding remains strong, with just a trace of tearing in evidence to the centremost portion of the front inner paper hinge and to the bottom 2 cm of the rear one. Faded old stamp of California bookseller to front paste-down, which also bears an old plain-pencilled price and initials. Original owner’s very faded brown-inked signature, dated 1924, to ffep. The printed pages remain clean and fresh, and free from former owners’ markings. Corrected dog-ears across upper outer corners of leaf comprising pp. 59-60, 113-114 and 123-4. Trace of marginal creasing towards lower outer corner of p. 74. No other faults found. Externally fair; internally very good (but for the small patches of internal indentation at the end, would rate near-fine). Overall, a good though imperfect copy of the very rare first edition of Carter’s very first book on astrology. Price factors in faults.
