hb Adams, Evangeline Astrology: Your Place Among the Stars 2nd impression Dodd, Mead and Company, New York 1930 £125 Stated 2nd printing, June 1930, after the first of May 1930. Only the early impressions feature the classic gilt design as here. Original full blue vertically ribbed cloth in vgc+ condition for age, with moderate rubbing to extremities of spine and outer corners of boards. The original gilt titling and illustrative details to the front board and spine are extremely well-conserved, remaining strong and bright. Traces of white staining to rear board; and a similar tiny white stain adjacent to word ‘Among’ on spine, but this does not touch or cross the gilt titling. Binding solid and strong more-or-less throughout, with just a hint of separation at inner paper hinges between pp. 304 and 305 and between pp. 416-417. Top edge of page block appears to have been dyed a reddish colour by the publisher, which has since browned. Internal pages remain mostly clean (with occasional hints of thumbing or traces of marginal staining), white, and free from obvious foxing. There is, however, a partial halo of browning confined to parts of pp. 178 to 9 resulting from a previous owner having stored a newspaper cutting there, not affecting clarity of print; a small splash splash stain to lower margin of p. 268, far from text (very slightly showing through to equivalent part of opposite side of leaf); and a tiny droplet stain to a blank part of the copyright page. Old plain-pencilled faint bookseller notes to ffep, plain-pencilled tick by chart to p. 521, and a few plain-pencilled notes to rear endpapers, but no permanent previous-owner mark-up found. Minor tearing to lower inner corners of leaves comprising pp. 161-4, far from text. Still a very good, complete example of this sought-after early impression published just a month after the rare first.
