ASSOCIATION COPY. Old full leather (sheep?) with gilt titling upon differently-coloured band of spine. Binding in vgc for age, with scattered mostly mild rubbing and scuffing; spine with patch of wear to top of front hinge and slight repair to very top of spine, white label on which a number has been hand-inked lower down spine. Trace of ink-staining to front board. An association copy, because of the apparent signature of notable American astrologer Ella Woods (the teacher of Marc Edmund Jones) in plain pencil to front paste-down, which also bears another early owner’s fine sepia pictorial bookplate, upon which the same number found on the spine has been repeated in small blue-inked figures; old bookseller price and a sum, also in plain pencil, to other parts of front paste-down. First ffep with marginal browning and plain-pencilled diagrams to both sides. Final rear free endpaper with further plain-pencilled sums. Title page with blank upper outer margin cut out and removed, together with three other, much smaller internal blank rectangular pieces, ostensibly to remove past ownership marks. A repeat of the same number found on the spine has survived to the upper inner margin, however. Leaf marked ‘Plate 2’ with short tear to bottom edge, far from nearest printed portion. Twin small dark-ink smudges to pp. xvi and xvii cross a little text of the Introduction, which can still be deciphered through it; similar to upper margin of p. 108, with one part crossing text without detriment to reading. Occasional much smaller traces of ink-staining elsewhere, and a smattering to p. 61 that is so thinly spread it barely affects reading at all. Old dark-inked marginal annotation to p. xix, and similar to lower margins of pp. 280, 298, but no other deliberate permanent internal markings to main text pages found. Corrected dog-ears or creases across upper outer corners of pp. xiii-xxii, 89-90, 95-6, 105-6, 209-10, 245-6 and 295-6, and to lower outer corner of leaf comprising pp. 119-120. Short tear to bottom edge of leaf comprising pp. 137-8, not reaching text. A few pages with plain-pencilled marginal dashes. Overall, this is an externally very good, internally good+ copy of the rare original edition, in a charming old full leather binding, with an interesting ownership history.
