Notes: The true first edition, predating the retitled second edition of 1915. As with all copies, the copyright is confusingly credited to another company, the Metaphysical Pub. Co. [Frontis.] + [2] + [pp. 3-71] + [3 pages of advertisements]. Text complete. Lacks only the penultimate leaf of advertisements – the book was originally bound with five pages of advertisements at the end.

Condition: Original full maroon cloth in vgc for age, with moderate rubbing to extremities of spine; light rubbing along spine hinges and to outer corners of boards; and traces of peripheral staining to boards. The gilt titling to the front board is remarkably well-conserved, remaining strong and bright. Front pasted-down with old pictorial bookplate neatly adhered to upper outer margin, and small Ohio bookstore address label to lower inner margin. Further small Ohio address label to lower outer margin of ffep, to the upper outer corner of which is an old blue-inked price marking. 3 cm closed tear to top of paper hinge where title page is bound. Paper hinge completely cracked at gutter between table of contents and p. 3, but underlying webbing strong. A couple of faint plain-pencilled marginal lines spotted, and plain-pencilled astrological calculations to lower margin of p. 58, but no permanent internal markings found. Final leaf of advertisements at end and rear free endpaper with traces of indentation in upper halves caused by slight vertical crease in rear paste-down. The penultimate leaf of advertisements originally bound in at the end has been neatly cut out down the inner margin and removed by a former owner – presumably because the services were of particular interest to the original owner. Otherwise complete. Overall, remains a very good copy of the rare and sought-after first edition of Hazelrigg’s first major work.
