The author’s real name was Duncan Macnaughton. These books are always undated in print, with no impression details provided. Volume III is a later impression; the others are first or early printings. The respective publication dates for the volumes are: 1927; 1929; unknown (after 1945); 1935; and unknown (after 1943)

All five volumes in original full cloth with gilt titling to spine. Vols. I, II, IV and V in black cloth; Vol. III in blue cloth. Vols. I and II near-fine, with minimal rubbing to extremities of spine hinges; Vol. I with slight bump towards middle of spine and tiny droplet stain to lower margin of front board. Vol. III structurally fine, with no wear found, although spine sun-faded as usual. Vols. IV and V in vgc+ condition, with moderate rubbing to extremities of spine and light rubbing to outer corners of boards; Vol. IV also has 5mm line of rubbing to lower margin of rear board and a 4mm trace of this to outer edge of front board. Vol. Is I, II and III with matching old plain-pencilled bookseller notes to upper margins of their respective ffeps. Vol. I with two black-inked arrows to table of contents, corrected dog-ears to upper outer corners of pp. 9-12, and traces of black-inked underlining to pp. 15-18, 21, 26-9 and 35-6, and of purple-inked underlining to pp. 129 and 176. Otherwise internally sound. Vol. II with traces of black-inked underlining to pp. 7-8 and 208, and tiny tear to bottom edge of leaf comprising pp. 61-2 (far from text), but no other internal faults found. Vol. III with slight strain to binding between pp. 106-7, but cords holding and webbing strong. No markings or other faults found. Vol. IV with curious silver-on-red pictorial six-sided sticker to lower inner margin of ffep and old plain-pencilled price to upper outer margin of same, but no other markings or faults found. Vol. V with no internal faults found although print to last few pages slightly weaker than the rest. Overall, a near-excellent complete antiquarian set. But for the the traces of underlining to Volumes I and II, which are the most common volumes in this set and could easily be replaced at moderate cost, it would rate excellent. This underlining has been factored into the set price.
