Fowler & Co., 7 Imperial Arcade, Ludgate Circus, London | 1916 | £150 | After the first edition of 1910 and second of 1913. All editions before the fourth of 1919 are rare and collectible. Complete in [3] + [pp. 6-57] + [pp. 60-114] + [2 pages of advertisements] (all copies of this edition were mispaginated thus – p. 57 is backed with p. 60). | ASSOCIATION COPY. Original textured card covers in vgc for age, with separation to bottom 5mm of spine, light wear to bottom edge of front cover, and moderate creasing to lower outer corners of covers. Manly P. Hall’s personal copy of this early edition, with his name stamp to upper margin of front cover. Staples rusty and have left rust stains around them at the spine, but covers remain attached. Leaves comprising pp. 53-66 have worked loose from the staples but remain present. The book could easily be repaired with new staples, which is recommended to the buyer. Corrected dog-ear to lower outer corner of leaf comprising pp. 43-4. Minor ink-smudging towards lower outer margin of p. 53. No deliberate internal markings or other faults found. A partly disbound but otherwise very good copy of this rare, collectible early edition, made all the more collectible by its provenance. Hall turned 15 in March 1916 and 18 in March 1919, the year when the enlarged fourth edition that replaced this edition was published. It is tempting to imagine that he owned this copy from new as a teenager, although this remains unproven. |
