Description

hb Raphael [= Smith, Robert Cross] A Manual of Astrology, or the Book of the Stars, being the Art of Foretelling Future Events By the influences of the Heavenly Bodies [3rd] Printed for Thomas Tegg and Son, 73, Cheapside, London 1937 £575 After the C. S. Arnold first edition of 1828, whose imprint is retained unaltered to the initial decorative title page in this edition; and the first Tegg printing of 1834 Attractively and tastefully rebound in custom half leather with five raised bands lined with gilt rule to spine, and gilt titling upon one panel formed between bands. With marbled paper-covered boards. Binding in fine condition. Marbled endpapers matching the design of the boards. Old plain-pencilled bookseller notes to ffep. Complete with all plate alled for: coloured frontis. ‘An Hieroglyphic of the Signs f the Heavens’, title page vignette, and Nativity of the King of England (uncoloured, as issued), which is bound in before p. 17. Internally a fairly clean copy for its age. There are 19th-century manuscript annotations in brown ink to a very small number of pages. The first of these appears to be the name of an early owner: ‘E. Dunn, Surgeon, Dudley, 1953’, to upper outer margin of the page of dedication to Sir Walter Scott; I found others only at pp. 106, 113, 157, 179, 204, 205, 206, 210, 211, 227. No modern permanent markings were found with the possible exception of a dark-inked marginal line drawing attention to part of a paragraph on p. 98. There are a few plain-pencilled annotations, such as three lines of plain-pencilled additions to the table of contents on p. xiv and assorted plain-pencilled marginal crosses to draw attention to paragraphs. Title page slightly thumbed. Minor ink smudge to lower margin of p. 195. Occasional corrected dog-ears, and very occasional tiny chips lost from margins, far from text. Small, neat repair in opaque paper-covered tape to upper margin of p. 256. Externally fine; internally good+; overall, this is a vgc+ copy.
