Lippincott Company, Philadelphia / London 1931 £55 After the original edition of 1923 and second of 1928 Original full red cloth in good- overall condition thanks to fraying to cloth down rear hinge having caused it to split there from the top to about 3 cm from the foot (see gallery picture). Thus, it is holding for now but would benefit from regluing or other professional attention. Moderate rubbing to cloth over outer corners of boards. Spine cloth internally bears some signs of vertical creasing. Traces of dark-staining to inset area between boards and spine, as commonly found on this edition. Former owner’s matching possibly stamped signatures to top and bottom closed edges of page block and ffep. Ffep also has vintage First Temple and College of Astrology address sticker to lower margin, and an old plain-pencilled bookseller price and number to upper margin. The internal binding is sound, with occasional minor straining at inner paper hinges, e.g. pp. 112-113, but nothing serious. No permanent markings are found beyond the ffep, though there are quite a few pages with light plain-pencilled mark-up, e.g. marginal ticks and lines. Short tear to outer edge of leaf comprising pp. 51-2, with associated corner crease. Slight halo of rust staining to upper margins of pp. 90-1 where a paper clip had formerly been stored, with trace to p. 93 and indentation to p. 92. Similar but mostly lesser traces of indentation to upper margins of pp. 99-110 approx. as though some other clips once held in the area. Externally good-; internally very good; overall, a good+ copy of this sought-after early edition, that could be improved with attention to the cloth over the spine.
