Lippincott Company, Philadelphia / London | 1931 | £125 | After the original edition of 1923 and second of 1928 | Original full red cloth in vgc+ condition for age, with wear to cloth over lower outer corners of boards, else near-fine, with light rubbing to foot of spine and a little minor staining. Front paste-down with charming vintage pictorial bookplate of early owner, and separate address stamp below; both the owner’s signature and the stamp have been loosely scrawled over in a later ink hand. Ffep with esoteric Chapel stamp and separate Llewellyn Publications distribution address label, a variant on which recurs to the lower part of the title page, where it has been pasted over the original publisher name. The binding remains solid, with minor separation visible at joins between occasional signatures, e.g. pp. 32-3. The printed pages are very clean and entirely free from previous-owner mark-up according to my search. There is an empty unmarked library pocket adhered to the rear paste-down, but overall this is an excellent copy of this sought-after early edition, the few former ownership marks to the endpapers notwithstanding. |
