[1] A series of publications collectively edited by Hans Daiber, Anna Akasoy and Emilie Savage-Smith

[2] This volume essentially comprises editions of two Arabic manuscripts with a combined English translation, and a Hebrew version with separate English translation, of Galen’s doctrine on the critical days as represented in a later corpus known as the Alexandrian Summaries of Galen, which is said to differ substantially from the Greek originals in content. Two new scholarly introductions precede the texts

[3] The first of four volumes of selections of the writings of Galen, translated into French from a mixture of unspecified sources. An art edition with no scholarly footnotes or pretences. The contents of this first volume include commentaries on the Timaeus and Republic of Plato, and three parts on the Natural Faculties, as well as assorted philosophical topics

[4] Library records give 1962

[5] The contents of this second volume include a section on medical astrology (pp. 9-[30]); commentaries on the Aphorisms of Hippocrates, an exhortation to the study of the arts, various guides to the correct use of medical terminology, and assorted commentaries on different medical philosophies and the therapeutic method

[6] Library records give 1962

[7] This third volume in the set starts with extracts from Galen’s work on the usefulness of the parts of the human body (see the complete work in English below), continuing with sections on the bones, on dissection, and on the movement of muscles

[8] Library records give 1962

[9] Ibid.

[10] A further 4200 copies were produced on pur fil dame blanche de Renage, numbered from 800 to 5000. The present volume is the only one to carry the limitation notice, but the others appear to be part of the same matched set. I have seen second-hand listings for some examples in more basic-looking bindings, which are suspected as representing the ordinary edition of 4200 copies

[11] A series of publications founded by James Loeb in 1911, and edited at this time by Jeffrey Henderson. An additional credit of “Editor Emeritus” is given to G. P. Goold here

[12] An edition of the Greek text established by Kühn, and further edited by Georg Helmreich, as published by Teubner in 1893, with facing English translation by Brock, who attests to having translated directly from the Greek

[13] A reprint of the edition first published in 1916, after previous reprints of 1928, 1947, 1952, 1963, 1979 and 1991

[14] A reprint of the edition first published by Cornell University Press, Ithaca, New York, 1968

[15] Ibid

[16] Described as “a member of the faculty of the American Museum – Hayden Planetarium”

[17] German library records give 1885

[17a] Clearly the original edition

[18] Presumed a retitled reprint of the original edition above; the date could be any time from 1974 to the 1980s

[18a] As hand-signed by Gallup to a preliminary page

[18b] A later bookseller has also added in pencil the original Latin title of the Garcaeus volume:  Astrologiae Methodus. However, the original volume is much lengthier than this translation, which is clearly only partial

[18c] This has been corrected in pencil by the same bookseller to 1576.

[18d] i.e. Jean Taisnier, sometimes referred to as Jean Taisner, Joanne Taisner or Johannes Taisnerius

[18e] A later bookseller has pencilled in to the title page the start of the title of the source volume: Astrologiae Iudiciiariae ysagogica. The title continued: … et totius divinatricis artis encomia.

[18f] A later bookseller has pencilled in the first part of the name of the Latin source volume: Opus Mathematicum Octo. The original title continued: ... libros complextens: inumeris propemodum figuris idealibus manuum et physiognomiae, aliisque adornatum, quorum sex priores libri absolutissimae cheiromantiae theoricam, praxim, doctrinam, artem, & experientiam verissimam continent. Septimus physiognomiae dispositionem, hominumque omnium qualitates & complexiones. Octavus periaxiomata de faciebus signorum, & quid sol in unaquaque domo existens, natis polliceatur. Remedia quoque omnium aegritudinum complectitur. Et naturalem astrologiam atque effectus lunae quoad diversas aegritudines. Item isaogen astrologiae judiciariae, & totius divinatricis artis encomia. Omnibus matheseos, cheiromantiae, philosophiae, & medicinae studiosis utiles ac necessarii

[18g] The original edition of ‘The Magus’ was published in 1801.

[18h] The headings within this section include, in sequential order: Signs of Hanging; Signs of Drowning; Signs of Burns or Scalds; Horses & Beasts; Death by Falls; If a Man Shall Marry; Number of Wives; Shall a Woman Marry; No. of Husbands; Never Marries; Time of Marriage; Qualities of the Mind; Diseases of the Mind; From “Raphael” (pp. 249-257); Influence of Herschell; Aphorisms of Disease and Sickness, from Johannes Garcaeus (pp. 261-5); Extracts from Various Authors (pp. 266-9); Transits (pp. 270-5); Mind and Understanding (pp. 276-282)

[18i] A later bookseller has speculatively pencilled in: ‘Notes from Books, Horoscopes, etc., circa 1870’. But it appears likely in view of the matching paper and binding that the date is extremely close to that of the first volume; 1868 or 1869 would be as good a guess

[18j] I have not with any certainty been able to identify Macdonald from online records. The Liverpool Mercury of December 25th, 1877 reports the death of a seaman named George Macdonald in a fall on the steamship Europa  while it was in dock, but neither the time of year nor the circumstances of the accident correspond, so it can reasonably be presumed that both the name of the ship and the surname of the seaman are coincidental, unless the press caption was based on serious misinformation

[18k] A later bookseller has pencilled in the authorship attribution by hand, but it is in any case clear from the title and date given

[18l] A later bookseller has pencilled in the start of the title of the source volume: Opusculum Astrologicum. According to library records at the National Library of Scotland, the full title of the original printed volume continues: ex diuersorum libris, summa cura pro studiosorum utilitate collectum, subnotata continens: Instructio intelligendae Ephemeridos. Isagoge Astrologiae iudiciariae. De electionibus communibus. Canones succincti natiuitatum. Tractatus integer electionum M. Laurentij Bonicontrij Miniarensis. Assertio contra calumniatores Astrologiae D. Eberhardi Schleusingeri clariss. Philosophi atq[ue] Medici.

[19] Despite the title, this is not an attempt to use astrology to predict earthquakes, and the author is very dismissive of astrologers in his words, but is speculating in a rambling lecturing fashion on a variety of ancient historical topics having to do with the Earth and its geology, in addition to commenting in passing on the Moon, Sun and some of the planets and other features of the solar system.

[20] Described on the dj front flap as a teacher of Jyotish at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan since 1994, and as a spiritual follower of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Sri Shakaracharya

[21] The foreword by K. N. Rao describes this book as primarily answering the need of “American and western readers” for a “lot of predictive firepower which their own astrology never provides”

[22] After the edition of 1949. The copyright of the present edition is credited to a Billy Jones

[23] After the edition whose foreword is dated January 3, 1936 – thus presumed to have been first published in 1936. No additional publication details are given for the present edition, which was bound in by design by the Lambert-Gann Publishing Company with its reprint of the first title in this volume

[24] A facsimile reproduction of eleven lessons said to have been originally sold by Gann between the 1930s and 1955, followed by reproductions of two promotional booklets of his: “Scientific Stock Forecasting or Large Profits on Small Risks” (1936) and “Why Money Is Lost On Commodities and Stocks And How To Make Profits” (1954)

[25] After the original edition of January 20, 1942 and revised edition of 1951. The copyright of the present edition is credited to Billy Jones

[26] At this time (1976), the price of his Stock Market Course was $450 and his Commodity Course $650, a significant reduction on their prices during his lifetime but much higher than the cost of reprints in the early 21st century, especially taking inflation into account

[27] A facsimile reproduction of a selection of nine mostly short writings by Gann, and a selection of his hand-drawn charts and calculations, followed by duplicates of the reproductions of the two promotional booklets of his also that are also featured at the end of the “Commodities Trading Courses” volume, q. v. above.

[28] A facsimile reproduction of eleven further lessons said to have been originally sold by Gann between the 1930s and 1955, followed by duplicates of the reproductions of the two promotional booklets of his also that are also featured at the end of the “Commodities Trading Courses” volume, q. v. above. The present volume was originally supplied by Cowan with a separate cardboard tube having openable round plastic ends, containing numerous rolled-up large printed charts on plain paper, and several printed transparent overlays. However, the tube belonging to this copy was somehow lost (complete with its contents) in a house move at the end of 2010, a probable victim of being jettisoned by a careless removals assistant

[29] After the editions of 1923 and 1951. The present copyright is credited to Billy Jones

[30] DNB gives 1954. After the original edition of 1920, recorded by the DNB as having 25 main pages. There was also an original expanded second edition of 1922 extending to 39 main pages. Since the present Baumgartner Verlag edition matches neither page count, it is not clear upon which edition it was based in the absence of either of the original editions being to hand
