[Front cover backed with notice] + [pp. 3-62 of tables] + [rear cover featuring 2 pages of advertisements]

[1] The volume is copyrighted 1982, but this evidently refers to the date of the first printing. The date of the current printing is not declared

[1a] Styled on the dj inner flap as Dr. James T. Hayes, ‘an English professor and director of composition at Murray State University’. At the time of publication, he was also on the board of directors of ISAR, putting him in the unusual position by today’s standards of being a serving academic simultaneously holding a senior position in one of the leading astrological organisations

[2] The full extended title on the main inner title page. The pictorially integrated front cover title is instead represented as ‘Classified and Illustrated Natural Inclinations Tendencies – Silver Bells – Life – Horoscopes – Personal Observations in Modern Astrology’

[3] A print-on-demand facsimile-based reprint, issued March 2009, of the original dissertation

[4] I have not yet been able to paginate this because it remains shrink-wrapped within temporary card end-supports awaiting binding

[5] This paperback edition is internally identical to the hardback one above, the sole difference lying in the binding and the additional blurb on the author on the rear cover of the paperback edition.

[6] The biographical text talks in the past tense as though Hazelrigg were deceased or at least no longer known as an active astrologer by this point in time. It would appear to have been issued thus at the time of first publication when he was still alive in his mid-70s, but as a retrospective view on his career.

[6a] It is not clear if either of these copies is the original printing or a later undeclared reprint, but we suspect the latter. The print has a suspiciously facsimile-like quality in many places, including a couple of traces of vertical ink lines towards the edges of two pages, while the paper has an unusually rough, absorbent quality for one as early as 1904. The copy at the Lane Medical Library of Stanford University has been digitised and has identical covers and endpapers, but includes an old Llewellyn Publications distribution sticker dating from the company’s tenure at 8921 National Boulevard. This would suggest that it was sold by Llewellyn between 1929 and the 1950s. The Stanford copy also bears a sticker showing that it was a part of the ‘Trace Element Collection in Memory of Ray Lyman Wilbur, M.D.’. Wilbur died in 1949 and had been a president of Stanford University. We incline to the tentative hypothesis that this was a short-run facsimile reprint distributed by Llewellyn in the wake of the success of their reprints of other titles by Hazelrigg in the 1930s or 1940s.

[6b] This loose leaf is cut to the size of the book’s pages and appears likely to be original though most frequently lost. It is printed as a table, with typed words integrated with the printed symbols used throughout the book

[6c] In spite of the eccentric pagination, the text content is continuous. It is not clear if the odd pagination is a product of this being a facsimile edition of the text sides only of a work originally characterised by double-page spreads including diagrams that could not be successfully reproduced by the available facsimile technology of the time of the reprint, but this is one plausible hypothesis among others

[7] But this copyright is credited to the Metaphysical Publishing Co.; it is thus unclear if this printing credited to the Philosophic Co., was in fact the sole first printing, although the advertisements at the rear for other publications by the Metaphysical Publishing Co. would tend to suggest so.

[8] This reprint by Llewellyn is presumed to date to 1948 or close to that, in common with their properly dated reprint of ‘Astrosophic Principles’. It is at the time of writing incorrectly dated in Worldcat to 1916, the date of the original Hermetic Publishing Company edition, q.v. above

[9] Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

[10] “Associate Professor of New Testament at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario”. He has a Ph.D. in religious studies from the University of Toronto

[11] A series of monographs edited by Gerald Bray

[12] Worldcat records give 2005

[13] Not found in German library records; but internal evidence suggests a date in the 1950s

[13a] In collaboration with Avriel Bar-Levav, Charles Burnett, Michael Grünbart and Petra G. Schmidl

[13b] A collection of 9 articles and papers collectively presented under the heading Part I: Introductory Surveys, and 32 under the heading Part II: Traditions and Practice of Prognostication in the Middle Ages, which includes subsections headed Eschatology and Millenarism, Dream Interpretation, Mantic Arts, Astral Sciences, Medical Prognostication, Calendrical Calculations, Weather Forecasting, and Quantifying Risks. The Astral Sciences subsection spans pp. 485-550 and comprises four essays, of which one is by Charles Burnett and one by Josefina Rodríguez-Arribas

[13c] In collaboration with Avriel Bar-Levav, Charles Burnett, Michael Grünbart and Petra G. Schmidl

[13d] A collection of 47 short articles and papers collectively presented under the heading Part III: Repertoire of Written Sources and Artefacts

[13e] A series of publications collectively edited by Dieter Wuttke

[13f] This volume is an extensive study of von Lübeck’s astrological interpretation, published in 1474, of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of 1504. A Latin critical edition with facing German translation of the text itself spans pp. 228-271. About 125 pages are given over to the historical reception of von Lübeck’s forecast

[13g] A series of publications edited at this time by Klaus Herbers in collaboration with a board of ten

[14] Translated from the original German edition of 1928 entitled “Charakter-Konstellation”

[14a] After the first printing of September 1936, with further impressions having followed in January and October 1937

[14b] This would appear to be accurate to this printing, in view of the advertising on pp. 378-9 indicating that Bands XIV and XVI are currently being printed and Band XV is in preparation

[15] P. 57 is directly backed with p. 60, so there are no missing pages here – the pagination is faulty

[16] A German translation of the book “Simplified Scientific Astrology”, q. v.

[17] Appears to be the first German edition from the absence of later volumes listed in the advertisement for the series at the back. The DNB records 1920

[17a] Ostensibly the clothbound issue of the first German edition. DNB gives 1920

[18] This printed address has been papered over with a typed slip reading ‘Max Heindel Rose Cross Philosophies, Oceanside, California’ on this copy

[19] The present printing appears to be a later one, probably from the 1930s as it advertises the eighth edition of Simplified Scientific Astrology

[20] This printing advertises the sixth edition of Simplified Scientific Astrology, which was published in 1928, and is presumed of similar vintage

[21] This printing advertises the sixth edition of Simplified Scientific Astrology, which was published in 1928, and is presumed of similar vintage although the imprint is noticeably different from that of our copy of No. 2 in the series, q. v. above
