Binding format and presentation notes:

  • Quarter-leather binding (front board missing) with paper-covered rear board (heavily worn at corners and edges, and scuffed).
  • Contents of Vol. I followed by an unpaginated 4-page volume index.
  • Lacks the advertised Lavater’s essays that were supplied with the original subscription issue of the magazine but not typically included in the bound volumes (and notably not integrated into the pagination scheme for the magazine either)
  • Many of the plates indicated in the tables of contents for the individual issues are also missing, in common with most other bound vols.. For reasons of clarity, the exact identities of those that are present in this set are shown in the individual issue pagination details above

[1] A note to the title page of the following issue indicates that this was printed thus ‘by mistake’, which is to say that it was really the issue for January, 1792

[2] The sudden leap in pagination of 100 pages within this issue is unexplained; but the error is then carried forward for the rest of the volume

About this Book Scan

Carefully scanned in full colour from our original printing.

Henry Lemoine launched The Conjuror’s Magazine as a substantial monthly forum for the discussion of occult thought and legerdemain in 1791. The present scan consists of the first year.

Please note that our source copy lacks one text leaf from the issue for February 1792. This has been replaced in modern typing in the scan file. In the issue for March 1792, the leaves comprising pp. 345-6 have a central chip with loss of text. These two pages are therefore supplemented with retyped versions of the whole text of the complete pages. Also, the Address to Correspondents at the start of the very first issue has some chips and tears. Our scan is therefore supplemented by a retyped rendition of the entire page. Pages 15 and 16 of the same issue also have some defects and have been supplemented with retyped versions accordingly. These defects, although compensated by the retyped text, are reflected in the modest asking price for the otherwise complete scan of this rare and extensive volume.
