Original full cloth in vgc for age, with light rubbing to extremities of rear spine hinge, upper outer corner of front board and lower outer corner of rear board; small patch of rubbing to bottom edge of front board; and scattered staining to boards. Rose-gilt zodiac illustration to front board still clear and mostly bright, with traces of surface discoloration within the illustrations; rose-gilt titling to spine also still clear. Purple endpapers intact. Tiny trace of liquid staining to lower outer corners of preliminary leaves, approx. 5mm max height by 2 cm across. Slight thumb-print to lower outer margin of p. 6. There is some permanent mark-up by the previous owner to various pages in the book, mainly dark-inked underlining, most of which is neatly ruled, but pp. 39-58, 61-2, 67, 107, 112 and 118 also have old yellow highlighting. Some other pages, and some of the same ones, have plain-pencilled underlining and annotations. Internally only good because of the mark-up; overall, a serviceable good+ copy of the sought-after first impression, which retains its original design values including rose-gilt details to the cloth binding. Price factors in faults.
