Publishers, Adelphi, London 1947 £27.50   Original full turquoise cloth with gilt titling to spine is in near-vgc condition for age, with moderate rubbing to foot of spine and outer corners of boards; spine remains unfaded, with just slight sun-fading along top and bottom edges. In good- original pictorial dj, which has a chip lost from the head of the spine, and brown tape repairs on the inside at the top and bottom of the spine and inner margins of adjacent panels, as well as to the inside of the joint between the upper margin of the front flap and the upper margin of the front panel. The dj remains attractive on the outside, and rarely survives at all. Ffep with old circular purple book stall stamp and some plain-pencilled bookseller notes to upper margin. Pages relatively age-browned, especially to periphery. Title page with inked signature and date of 1964, together with stamp of ‘A4’, in blank portions. Signature repeated on or near upper margins of pp. 45, 89, 119 and 125, never crossing any text, and to the closed upper and outer edges of the page block. Short sentence to p. 14 underlined in reddish-brown, likewise one word to p. 16 and a two-word phrase to p. 44. A couple of tiny plain pencil marks to p. 19. Two successive lines to p. 22 partly underlined in dark blue ink. Tiny black ink stain over central part of word ‘character’ to p. 62, not affecting legibility. Minor turquoise marginal annotations (mainly initials) from pp. 64-5 and 67-70. Externally very good; internally good. Overall, a good+ copy in a good- dj.
