The work was originally published as a series of leaves in a black ring binder in 1929, which is the nominal first edition, hence its first appearance as a book being the nominal 2nd. Not to be confused with the more common 3rd edition, which retained the 1931 copyright date but was printed in the 1940s | Original full red cloth in excellent condition for its age, with only light rubbing to extremities of spine and minimal traces to outer corners of boards; trace of minor staining to upper margin of rear board. Gilt titling to spine unusually strong and bright for this early edition. Page-edges mildly toned. Internal binding strong. Small plain-pencilled bookseller note to ffep. Small accidental blue slip-of-a-pen mark to outer margin of p. 159. No other previous owner markings found. Very faint trace of staining to blank part of p. 132. The only other fault I could find is a couple of small liquid stains to the top edge of the page block, which have seeped into the upper few mm (up to around 7mm) of parts of the upper margins of some pages, a long way from the text. Otherwise an excellent-looking and uncommonly well-conserved copy of the first properly bound edition (and second overall edition) of this sought-after work by Hall |
