Foulsham & Co., Ltd., 5, Pilgrim Street, Ludgate Hill, E.C., London n.d. £250 The rare true first edition of 1913, as shown by the publisher’s address, which was active only from 1912 to 1917. Complete in [2 leaves] + [pp. 5-7] + [pp. 9-136] + [8 pages of advertisements] Original full dark green cloth in good condition for its age, with separation and light chipping to bottom 2cm of cloth at foot of front spine hinge; top 2.5 cm of cloth at top of rear spine hinge also separating but without loss, but trace of wear to cloth over upper inner corner of rear board; cloth also worn over most outer corners of boards. Silver titling and key illustration to front board are still fairly strong, with partial fading. Free endpapers slightly toned; front and rear paste-downs with occasional minor stains. The main pages are generally fairly clean, with occasional minor staining, and mostly unmarked. The only previous owner markings I could find are as follows: 1: The table of planetary hours at the top of p. 18 has been slightly marked up in tiny old red-inked lettering with abbreviated names of days of the week beneath ‘Sunday’. 2. Blue-inked slip-of-a-pen mark to lower margin of p. 30. There are a couple of minor paper losses to report from the margins, as follows: 1. Triangular chip lost from blank upper margin of leaf comprising pp. 111-112 (far from text); small hole in corresponding upper marginal area of following leaf (again far from text). 2. Tiny loss to lower outer corner of leaf comprising pp. 15-16, far from text. Very occasional corrected dog-ears or creases, but no other faults found. Still a good copy overall of the very rare true first edition, which is the only one with 136 pages – the second edition of 1919 and all later impressions thereof were cut to 94 or 93 pages. Thus, this rare first edition with the 5, Pilgrim Street publisher address is highly sought-after because it is the only complete, uncut edition that was published by the original publisher, Foulsham.
