First entry, March 9th, 2022: 2022 has begun relatively slowly as a result of the need to save for essential works on the house. Much more still needs to be saved for, and taking into consideration the coming cost of living crisis occasioned by the sixfold increase in wholesale gas prices alongside a rapid rise in wholesale electricity prices since just twelve months ago, it is expected that the total number of books afforded this year will be a small fraction of those in each of the past three years. There are times for rapid collecting, and times for consolidation of what has been acquired already; and 2022 will be a year of consolidation. However, selective acquisitions will continue as far as spare means allows, with a focus particularly on second-hand rarities and, where affordable at all, essential new academic books. Books by 26 authors have been received so far this year, but many of these were already ordered from the USA in November and December 2021, and have been received and catalogued since as a result of onward consolidated international shipping being held back to the new year. Not all the books received so far are strictly astrological, with a few being other esoteric works by notable astrologers, for instance Descriptive Mentality by Holmes Whittier Merton, who also wrote Heliocentric Astrology and Solar Mentality under his pseudonym of Yarmo Vedra.
Second entry, May 29th, 2022: After four very slow first months to the year, acquisitions have picked up in May, with a combination of mostly new and some used books having arrived at the library in the past month or so. This includes some previously purchased in the United States of America and subsequently sent on to the library. As a result, the total number of first-named authors and / or editors by whom books have been received and catalogued online so far this year is up from 26 on March 9th to 67 now. Although this is still well behind the schedule of the past few years, it’s nonetheless compatible with exceeding a modest nominal target of 10 books per month, or 120 in the year as a whole. More new books are already on order.
Third entry, July 25th, 2022: Over the past eight weeks, books by a further 53 first-named authors have been added to the library and catalogued, raising the author count for the year to date to exactly 120, which meets the modest year-end target with a third of the year still to spare. Much of this unexpectedly rapid progress has been made thanks to relatively low-cost Indian books, a protracted effort to boost the library’s coverage of which has been underway these past few months. The 53 additional authors will be displayed in the list beneath in green until the next update, to differentiate them from those already shown earlier in the year.
Fourth entry, December 27th, 2022: Since the last update five months ago, books by a further 128 first-named authors have been received and belatedly added to the library catalogue, slightly more than doubling the cumulative total of first-named authors for the year to date to 248. As usual, the additions since the last update are displayed in green, although some books by authors previously featured during the year have also been added, represented only by additional dates being included alongside their names, but not in green. Many of the additions since late July have been Indian astrology books, a strong collecting focus since the Spring this year, but some academic books and some general modern astrology books, as well as a few moderately antiquarian ones from the early 20th century, have also arrived. This has not been a year for antique books, income not having permitted such acquisitions, but it has been a year of major progress in the Vedic astrology section of the library, and selective modest updates in other areas.
