[1] After stated first printing of 2009

[1a] The only date given for this printing is “Republished 1970”, but it was purchased new after 2000 and is likely to be a later printing of the Health Research edition. Internally, it is a facsimile reprint of the 1892 edition, unaltered except for the folding illustrations not being bound in

[1b] The title to the main inner title page, with following extended subtitle. The front cover title is differently represented as ‘The Ancient Sacred and Secret Law of the Christ’, with no subtitle following

[2] A series of publications collectively edited by George H. van Kooten, Robert A. Kugler and Loren T. Stuckenbruck, assisted by an advisory board of six

[3] A collection of twenty studies by different scholars, including Owen Gingerich, Michael R. Molnar, Alexander Jones, John M. Steele, Antonio Panaino, Roger Beck, Stephan Heilen, Kocku von Stuckrad, Helen R. Jacobus, and the editors. Many of the studies are concerned with astrology

[4] A short work on bible astrology, and not, as the title might otherwise suggest, a general popular guide to the zodiac.

[5] This leaf, not present in the second copy, is an errata sheet

[6] This is the full title to the inner title page. On the front cover, the references to the magazines in which the articles were originally published are omitted, together with the extended list of the author’s honours; but the label ‘Vol. 2’ is added, to identify the present volume as Cornell’s second published anthology of magazine articles. For Vol. 1 of the same series, see ‘Astrology and the Diagnosis of Disease’, above

[7] “The Senior Minister of the Dublin Unitarian Church”

[7a] Reset from the exceedingly scarce first edition of 1811

[7b] After the 1986 edition by Research Into Lost Organisation, which contains an added five-page scholarly foreword by James P. Carley, Ph.D., dated 1985, and retained in this reprint. It appears to be otherwise a facsimile reprint of the original 1811 edition, which is characterised by a larger number of shorter pages than the 1866 one, q. v. above

[8] The first edition is given as 1933, with a further reprint in 1945

[9] The date of the first printing is given as 1996

[10] A work divided into three chapters, of which the third, “The Modern World in Daniel”, is by far the longest, spanning pp. [33]-78. The first two are entitled “Celestial Cause” and “Concerning the End of the World”

[11] A collection of three dense, concise and very well-referenced essays by the author: ‘The Mithraic Mysteries – A Roman Star Cult’; ‘Judaism and its Astrotheological Heritage’; and ‘Christianity – Jesus, the Sun and the Stars’, serving as valuable summaries of the existing scholarly research on these topics, together with the author’s own critical commentaries

[11a] Germany library records differ, variously suggesting 1947 or 1948

[11b] The official first edition of the author’s full-length book under this name, which is vastly expanded from the original pamphlet of ten years earlier, q. v. above

[11c] The book includes extensive references to and discussion of recent German astrological literature

[12] “Associate Professor of New Testament at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario”. He has a Ph.D. in religious studies from the University of Toronto

[13] A series of monographs edited by Gerald Bray

[14] Worldcat records give 2005

[15] The full title on the inner title page. On the front cover, it is reduced and re-ordered to ‘The Hand of God On the Wall: Spiritual Astrology’

[16] A series of publications collectively edited at this time by Herausgegeben Ernst Heitsch, Reinhold Merkelbach and Clemens Zintzen

[17] A series of publications edited by Edward Peters, Professor of Medieval History, University of Pennsylvania

[18] A facsimile reprint, issued early-mid 2000s, of the original edition bearing the imprint “Published by the Author, Portland, Oregon”. The preface is dated 1919, and library records concur with this as the date of publication

[19] 80 of the illustrations from the Doré Bible are said to have been selected and reprinted in this volume

[20] The core of this book is a simple modern primer of natal astrology by Matthews, with the Doré illustrations on facing pages serving purely decorative roles, although there are some sections of text connected more directly with the Bible

[21] According to library records, both the first and second editions were published in 1908 and of the same overall length. The preface retains the date of January 1908; and the author’s note to the third edition indicates that the second was published four months after the first. The author indicates the alteration of a few paragraphs in the present edition, “where it seemed desirable to bring forward new information”

[22] After original printing of 2004

[23] Only the New Jersey address is given in full although it appears second in the credit list on the title page: 100 Joyce Kilmer Avenue, Piscataway, N. J. 08854.

[24] The text is copyrighted 1999, this being presumed the date of the original printing

[25] A series of short anti-astrological essays by several writers from a Christian perspective

[26] Confusingly, Maas is credited only as having translated Parts 1 and 3 of the work. Part 2 is also present and spans pp. [191]-464, but its translator has not been credited here. Perhaps Powell provided his own translation of Part 2.

[27] Translated from the English-language edition published by Anthroposophic Press in 1996 as ‘Chronicle of the Living Christ’. The present translation is said to have been revised and expanded by the author himself, who previously spent four years studying in Switzerland and appears to be fluent in German, as would befit a dedicated follower of the anthroposophic philosophy of Rudolf Steiner. Whatever the reason, it is about 70 pages longer than the 1996 English-language edition

[28] After the original edition of April the same year

[29] The initial capital letters to both the forename of the recipient and the first place name following the surname are very hard to decipher and might be otherwise than assumed here

[30] Reproduced from ‘The Witness of the Stars’ by E. W. Bullinger, q. v., with permission, in common with the other plates in this volume, which are just a selection of those in Bullinger’s work

[31] Described on the title page as “Bible Expositor” for “The Word of Grace”

[32] Despite the lack of picture on the front board of this copy, the binding appears original in view of the font on the spine exactly matching that on the other. From the available internal evidence, it is reasonably presumed the original issue

[33] In common with the issue shown above, the only firm internal date is the copyright date of 1907. However, the added “Second Preface” (which I have more accurately characterised in my pagination as “4 pages of advertisements”) in this issue refers to the Great War as being current. The present issue is therefore presumed to date from around 1915-1918. The binding notably lacks the gilt edges and titles, rounded outer-corners and laid-in chart of the original issue shown above, though it has gained an added silver illustration to the front board, entitled ‘The Twelve Signs of the Zodiac’. The last line of the list of the author’s other publications on the original title page has been effaced in this printing, as the new imprimatur has been superimposed prior to printing. It seems reasonable to conjecture that Stowe had wound up his Astrological Publishing Co. at some point since 1907, and was now therefore selling his book in his own personal name as publisher. It would appear from the wording of the added preface that this issue should also have been supplied with the large fold-out chart, but it has been lost from this copy, presumably long ago, and its survival with any early edition of the book is rare

[34] An undated later impression, purchased new in early 2000s, of the Health Research facsimile reprint first published in 1965. The publisher’s website address is given on the copyright page, proving that this reprint cannot predate 1994. In all probability it was either printed and bound on demand or issued from recently printed stock at the time of purchase. It is not clear from what edition the Health Research reprint was itself sourced, or why it has considerably more prefatory pages than the original edition

[35] An earlier copyright date of 1915 is also given, and in the foreword the present printing is expressly stated as being the second edition. No 1915 edition could be located in online library records

[36] Comprises transcripts of sermons seemingly originally published serially on a weekly basis, from No. 24, August 19, 1831 to No. 46, January 20, 1832, each sermon being assigned 16 pages, and thus presumably edited or shaped to fit the available space in the original serial publication. Some of the sermons, such as No. 24, are specified as having been delivered on earlier dates (in that case, Feb. 11, 1830) than their dates of publication. This volume was a sequel to  “The Devil’s Pulpit Vol. I”, of which the Ballantrae Reprint unfortunately is missing from this collection since another title was mistakenly supplied under its covers (see the Ballantrae Reprint of “A Plea for Urania” under Cooke, Christopher above) when it was ordered. The sermons in the present second volume cover a wide range of Bible interpretation topics, some of them making reference to the signs of the zodiac or the constellations

[37] A facsimile reprint, issued early-mid 2000s, of an early reprint published by W. Dugdale, 16, Holywell St., Strand, London, 1842, of the work first published in 1832 by Richard Carlile, London

[37a] Mrs. Thompson has hand-dated the lecture to May 1903

[37b] With the author’s hand corrections, including correcting her own middle name to Victoria. The content appears at least partly distinctive from the printed lecture of the same name listed above

[38] COPAC records 1961 for this imprimatur

[39] A series of publications collectively edited at this time by D. Friedrich Kropatscheck, Professor in Breslau
