[1] A history of cosmology from the 19th century to the time of writing (the mid-1960s). It is not focused on astrology but is good general background reading for understanding the development of the modern scientific consensus on cosmology, although the mathematical presentation is highly advanced in places

[2] The date of the first American edition is given as 1994. A further note reads: “Originally published in England under the title The Fontana History of Astronomy and Cosmology“.

[3] A collection of 24 separate essays, including an extensive one entitled “Celestial Influence – the Major Premiss of Astrology”, which spans pp. 243-298

[4] A compendium of eighteen articles by the author previously published in assorted books and periodicals

[5] Except on the copyright page, where his full name appears, he is dubbed just ‘Norvell’. He is said to have served as an astrological advisor to Hollywood film stars and to have lectured at Carnegie Hall, New York City starting in the early 1940s

[6] Of the 394 copies issued, those numbered 1-77 were supplemented by a “suite” of the artwork featured in the volume in special papers; and those from 1-22 further accompanied by an original gouache painting

[7] Brind’Amour, of Ottawa, died in January 1995. Beforehand, he charged a local colleague, Pierre Kunstmann, to bring his edition of the 1555 edition of the first centuries to publication. Kunstmann revised the work, completing Brind’Amour’s unfinished introduction by adding 12 pages of his own material.

[7a] The authorship of this work is not expressly stated in this edition, but is revealed by David Pingree in his Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit Series A, Volume 3, pp. 195-7 (q.v.). Pingree lists several different authors of this seemingly common name; but this one is said to have been the “son of Varadarya of the Bharadvajagotra and a resident of Polipakkam”

[7b] The original Sanskrit text is said by Iyer in his Introduction to have been edited by Pandit Sr. Saptharishi Bhaghavathar Avl. of Tanjore. It accounts for the final 197 pages of this volume and is preceded by Iyer’s translation

[7c] Said to have been first published in 1917

[8] The authorship of this work is not expressly stated in this edition, but is revealed by David Pingree in his Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit Series A, Volume 3, pp. 195-7 (q.v.). Pingree lists several different authors of this seemingly common name; but this one is said to have been the “son of Varadarya of the Bharadvajagotra and a resident of Polipakkam”

[9] The original Sanskrit text is said by Iyer in his Introduction to have been edited by Pandit Sr. Saptharishi Bhaghavathar Avl. of Tanjore. It accounts for the final 197 pages of this volume and is preceded by Iyer’s translation

[10] After the first AES reprint of 1982; the date of the second is not specified. The original edition of Iyer’s translation and edition was published in 1917

[11] Dated 1995, but this might relate to the first printing only

[11a] A series of publications published under the auspices of the Scientific Instrument Commission, and collectively edited by Giorgio Strano, supported by an editorial board of three

[11b] Billed as a ‘revised and updated’ translation from the original edition of 1993 entitled Die Straßburger Münsteruhr: Funktion und Bedeutung eines Kosmos-Modells des 16. Jahrhunderts, and published by GNT-Verlag

[12] The publication credits are presented thus, albeit with several individuals then named for their involvement in bringing about publication: Gerd Biegel, Menso Folkerts, Angela Klein, Günther Oestmann and Karin Reich. A note follows: “Der Druck wurde gefördet von de Braunschweig-Stiftung”. The copyright is claimed by “Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum und Autor, Braunschweig, 2004”. The remaining credits on the page belong to a design company and two printers. Thus, the volume (and presumably also the series it belongs to) would appear to be an unusual collaboratively self-published effort, not the issue of a single established publisher.

[13] A series of publications edited by Gustavo Benavides and Kocku von Stuckrad

[14] A collection of fourteen papers presented at the conference “Horoscopes and History” held at the University of Amsterdam in 2004. Authors include Wolfgang Hübner, Josèphe Henriette Abry, Stephan Heilen, Nicholas Campion, David Pingree, Monica Azzolini, Steven vanden Broecke, Patrick Curry, and the editors of the present volume
